- Faceoff between Duke and Denver Friday is set for 4 p.m., on ESPNU. Chris Cotter (PxP) and Quint Kessenich (analyst) will call the action as two of the all-time great coaches in the sport of lacrosse square off for a final time in the regular season

The Opening Faceoff
- Duke returns home to host Denver in a Friday matinee at 4 p.m. The Blue Devils and Pioneers square off for the 13th straight season. Duke is 7-6 in that stretch, including winning each of the past five outings.
- Denver is coming off a 12-10 loss Saturday at Air Force. The Pioneers are 1-1 overall and averaging just 11 goals per game. They opened the 2023 campaign with a 12-4 victory over Utah.
- The attack unit of Andrew McAdorey, Brennan O'Neill and Dyson Williams have paced the Blue Devils through three games. The trio has combined for 43 of the team's 76 points with all three having at least 13 points to their names.
- Duke's defense has been solid overall, holding teams to just 35.7 shots per game and to 9.33 goals per game. The Blue Devils have yet to give a man-up goal on 13 man-down situations.
- Graduate student transfer William Helm is solid in the cage, making 34 saves, while allowing 23 goals for a 8.84 goals against average.
- Junior faceoff specialist Jake Naso sports a .681 win percentage at the dot to rank 20th nationally. On the other side of the, Denver's Alec Stathakis in 19th at .690 after two games.

About Denver
- Denver comes to Durham following a 12-10 loss at Air Force Saturday. The Pioneers trailed 7-4 at halftime and couldn't complete the comeback in the fourth quarter.
- JJ Sillstrop leads the Pioneers with six points (5g, 1a), while Stephen Avery has four goals and an assist and Noah Manning has three and two, respectively. The Pioneers are averaging 11 goals and 35.5 shots per game after two outings.
- Alec Stathakis has taken all of the faceoffs, winning 30-of-43 and picking up 20 ground balls. In goal, Jack Thompson is the anchor, averaging eight saves per game and sporting a .429 save percentage.
- The Pioneers, under the direction of legendary coach Bill Tierney in his final season, were picked to finish second behind Georgetown in the BIG EAST. Sillstrop, Jack DiBenedetto and Jack Thompson were preseason All-BIG EAST choices.
Series History
- Duke is 10-6 all-time against Denver and has won five straight, including last year's convincing 19-10 victory in Durham. The Blue Devils last lost to the Pioneers in 2017, a 14-9 setback in Denver.
- The Blue Devils and Pioneers face off for the 13th consecutive year Friday with Duke going 7-6 in those games. It will be the 26th time the two legendary coaches will have faced each other with Bill Tierney holding a slight 13-12 edge.
- The average margin of victory in the games has been 3.38 in the 16 meetings with last year's nine-goal win for Duke being the largest.
Last Time We Met
- Brennan O'Neill and Dyson Williams both had four goals and two assists apiece as Duke outscored Denver 10-4 in the second half for the 19-10 victory. Nakeie Montgomery also had a hat trick.
- Duke forced 17 turnovers by the Pioneers and Mike Adler had 10 saves in 55 minutes of action. The Blue Devils dominated the action on the ground, picking up 36 ground balls to Denver's 19 despite only winning three more faceoffs.
Home Sweet Home
- Duke had its 14-game win streak snapped last season against Jacksonville, but the Blue Devils have fared well at home overall.
- Duke is 134-25 in games in Durham under head coach John Danowski. The Blue Devils have gone unbeaten at home three times since 2007.
Faceoff Battle Looming
- Friday's battle at the faceoff dot is one to watch as it features two of the top draw men in the country in Duke's Jake Naso and Denver's Alec Stathakis. The Pioneer FOGO has 534 career wins in 40 games and Naso has 517 in 36 outings to rank seventh and eighth among active players, respectively.
- Naso only took one faceoff in the 2020 matchup with the Pioneers and went 16-of-28 last season. Stathakis won 13-of-30 last season and is 36-of-57 for his career.
