JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville outscored Duke 8-3 in the second half to upend the seventh-ranked Blue Devils, 13-12, in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville.
The 17th-ranked Dolphins outscored Duke 7-2 in the third quarter to erase the Blue Devils' 9-5 halftime advantage. Jack Taylor and Brandon Galloway both had hat tricks to pace Jacksonville's offense while Luke Millican made 13 saves between the pipes for the Dolphins, including eight in the third quarter.
Junior
Brennan O'Neill led the Blue Devils with five goals, while
Dyson Williams had three. In goal,
William Helm made 11 saves and
Jake Naso went 19-of-27 at the faceoff dot and picked up 16 ground balls.
How it Happened
- Jacksonville came out firing in the first quarter, roaring to a 3-1 lead in the first 5:07. The Blue Devils got a score from Aidan Danenza to make it 3-2, but the Dolphins responded with 4:20 remaining for the 4-2 advantage after 15 minutes.
- The second quarter was all Blue Devils. O'Neill led the charge with the period's first three goals to give Duke its first lead of the afternoon, 5-4. Danenza connected on a man-up goal off a pass from Owen Caputo and then Andrew McAdorey, Williams and Caputo capped the 7-0 run for a 9-4 lead.
- Jacksonville ended its 18-minute scoring drought when Taylor threw in his first of the day, bringing the Dolphins within four, 9-5, at the break.
- The Dolphins flipped the script in the third quarter, outscoring Duke 7-2. The Blue Devils had their own scoring drought, going 11:21 between goals.
- Trailing 12-11 after three stanzas, Duke went down two again two minutes into the fourth. The Blue Devils answered 32 seconds later as Caputo found Williams on the crease to make it a 13-12 game.
- After combining for 11 goals in a span of 17:38, neither team was able to find the net. Duke earned a final possession, but a bad pass to the back post clinched the second straight victory over Duke for the Dolphins.
- Duke outshot Jacksonville, 48-35, and won the ground ball battle 35-21. However, the Blue Devils had 16 turnovers and only hit the cage on 25 shots.
Notes
- Jake Naso matched his career high in ground balls with 16. His 19 faceoff wins pushed his career total to 517, making him the fifth player in program history to amass at least 500 career faceoff victories. He is 517-of-862 (.600) in his two-plus seasons.
- Brennan O'Neill notched his 13th game with at least five points and his 21st career hat trick. He pushes his career goals total to 107 and points to 145. He ranks tied for 32nd in career points at Duke.
- The Blue Devils have yet to give up an extra-man goal this season, killing off 6:30 of penalties this afternoon against the Dolphins, including a pair of two-minute non-releasable fouls.
