DURHAM – Duke baseball's 2023 Fall World Series went the distance on Saturday afternoon, as the Black Team, captained by senior catcher
Alex Stone and junior right-handed pitcher
David Boisvert, took home championship with a 3-0 victory.
In game one on Thursday, the Black Team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a
Chad Knight two-run home run and a
Wallace Clark triple in the sixth. Graduate right-handed pitcher
Jackson Emus tossed a gem for the Black Team, working six innings and punching out 12 batters. Emus allowed two hits and did not surrender a walk.
The Blue Team rallied to win game one, as junior outfielder
Devin Obee walked it off to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Obee finished the evening 2-for-4 with a double and a walk-off single.
Logan Bravo and
Kyle Johnson both finished the night 2-for-4, while Knight had the big two-run home run to extend the Black Team's lead early.
Knight picked up where he left off in game two of the Fall World Series, knocking a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the third inning to open the scoring, 3-0. The Blue Team responded with three consecutive hits to cut into the lead, 3-2. Knight collected his fourth RBI of the evening, grounding out to first to double the scoring for the Black Team, 6-2.
The Black Team held on in game two to even the series at one game apiece, after shutting down a two-out rally in the ninth to win, 11-9.
In game three, junior
Jonathan Santucci started for the Black Team, working three scoreless innings and punched out four. He allowed just one hit and set the tone for a defensive game three.
The Black Team would slam the door late, as
Gabriel Nard worked the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two to win the Fall World Series.
Freshman
AJ Gracia worked three innings throughout the Fall World Series allowing just one hit and striking out a pair. Graduate pitcher
Charlie Beilenson completed 2.2 innings of hitless baseball, striking out three.
Offensively,
Ben Weaver led all Blue Devils with a .625 average at the plate. He drove in three runs and collected five hits throughout the weekend. Knight led all Duke players with six RBI, while senior catcher Stone blasted a home run and drove in five RBI himself.
Ben Miller walked a team-high four times in the World Series, posting a .600 average at the plate with two RBI. Obee, who walked off game one, collected a .375 average at the plate with two doubles and three RBI.
