DURHAM – The Duke fencing team is set to open up the 2023-24 slate this weekend at the Temple Open in Philadelphia, Pa.
Competitors in women's foil, women's epee and women's saber will compete on Saturday, Nov. 4, with men's foil, men's epee, and men's saber competing on Sunday, Nov. 5. On the women's side, foil and epee will begin at 8 a.m., with saber beginning at 12:30 p.m. On the men's side, epee and foil will begin at 8 a.m. and saber will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Both the men and women check in at ninth nationally. The 2023 reigning NCAA Champion Notre Dame men took the top spot in the men's poll while Princeton is first on the women's side. No. 2 Columbia and No. 3 Princeton round out the men's top three while No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Columbia make up the women's.
The Blue Devils are coming off a successful 2022-23 season and looks to carry that momentum with them.
Head coach
Omar Elgeziry is in his first year with the Blue Devils and will look to a quartet of elected captains –
Christina Ferrari, Xavier Ghazaleh, Stephen Kim and
Sarah Lurye – to lead Duke this season. Duke returns six of last year's eight NCAA qualifiers.
Following this weekend, Duke will return to action Nov. 19 at the Elite Invitational, hosted by Ohio State.
