DURHAM – Duke baseball looks at the 2023 Major League Clubs and their affiliates, as we check in on our Pro Blue Devils across the country.
Former Blue Devils pitching coach
Pete Maki helped the Minnesota Twins snap an 18-game losing streak in the playoffs and advance to the ALDS for the first time since 2002. The Twins finished the 2023 regular season with an 87-75 record, posting the sixth-best ERA in baseball at 3.87.
Fellow pitching coach
Dusty Blake and the St. Louis Cardinals missed the 2023 postseason with a 71-91 record. The Cardinals posted a 4.79 ERA this past season.
Bryce Jarvis – Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB)
Jarvis made his MLB debut on Aug. 15, 2023, and made the Diamondbacks Wild Card roster earlier this week. The former No. 18 overall pick, posted a 2-1 record in 11 games for Arizona, tallying 23.2 innings of work. He recorded a 3.04 ERA and struck out 12 batters during that span. Jarvis and the Diamondbacks swept the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card Series and will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a five-game series beginning Oct. 7, at 9:20 p.m.
Marcus Stroman – Chicago Cubs (MLB)
Stroman started 25 of the 27 games he appeared in during the 2023 season, missing out on the postseason by a game. The right-handed pitcher posted a 10-9 record on the mound with a 3.95 ERA in his 136.2 innings of work. He punched out 119 batters and tallied a 1.26 WHIP this season.
Matt Mervis – Chicago Cubs (MLB)
Mervis was the first of two former Duke Blue Devils to make their MLB debut in 2023, starting for the Cubs against the Miami Marlins on May 5, 2023. The former first baseman recorded 15 hits, three home runs and 11 RBI for the Cubs during his stretch on the big-league roster. At Triple-A, Mervis posted a .282 average with 22 home runs and 78 RBI. He tallied a .932 OPS and scored 77 runs.
Jimmy Herron – Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA | Colorado Rockies)
Herron tallied 456 at bats for the Isotopes in 2023, recording a .296 average at the plate. He produced 135 hits, 106 runs, 19 home runs, 83 RBI and 33 stolen bases. The former third round pick posted a .893 OPS and 69 walks.
Joey Loperfido – Sugar Land Space Cowboys (AAA | Houston Astros)
Loperfido was named the Houston Astros Minor League Player of the Year earlier this month, after an impressive season at Triple-A. Loperfido produced a .278 average at the plate with 79 runs, 130 hits, 25 home runs and 78 RBI. The former 208th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, added 27 stolen bases with an .880 OPS.
Graham Pauley – Peoria Javelinas (AAA | San Diego Padres)
Pauley was named the San Diego Padres Minor League Player of the Year earlier this month, after finishing the 2023 campaign with a .308 average at the plate. He tallied 148 hits, 98 runs, 23 home runs, 94 RBI and 22 stolen bases. The former Blue Devils third baseman was one of six Minor Leaguers this season to post 20 HR/30 2B/20 SB. He joined the likes of Jordan Beck, Ryan Bliss, Troy Johnston, Ronny Mauricio and Ceddanne Rafaela.
Griffin Conine – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (AAA | Miami Marlins)
Conine became the Pensacola Blue Wahoos all-time career leader in home runs earlier in the season, before being elevated to Triple-A Jacksonville late in the year. During the 2023 season, Conine posted a .247 average across two levels of minor league baseball. He recorded 92 hits, 60 runs, 20 home runs and 72 RBI.
Ethan Murray – Biloxi Shuckers (AA | Milwaukee Brewers)
Murray finished the 2023 season with a .256 average at the plate for Biloxi. He tallied 90 hits, 52 runs, six home runs, 48 RBI and posted a .729 OPS. The former 5th round pick appeared in 104 games and stole 10 bases.
Graeme Stinson – Montgomery Biscuits (AA | Tampa Bay Rays)
Stinson appeared in 31 games, starting two and made one save. He recorded a 4-6 record on the mound in his 48.1 innings of work. Stinson tallied 58 strikeouts and posted a 1.63 WHIP in 2023.
Adam Laskey – Tennessee Smokies (AA | Chicago Cubs)
Laskey appeared in 38 games over two levels of the Chicago Cubs organization, posting a 4-1 record. He tallied 59 strikeouts in 48.2 innings of work. Laskey was transferred to the Development List late in the season and appeared in five games for the South Bend Cubs of High-A.
Jack Carey – Altoona Curve (AA | Pittsburgh Pirates)
Carey appeared in 40 games across two levels of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He tallied a 2-1 record with a 4.09 ERA and three saves. He struck out 63 batters and posted a 1.52 WHIP.
Michael Rothenberg – Lakeland Flying Tigers (A | Detroit Tigers)
Rothenberg started the season with the Tigers Florida Complex League team, before being transferred to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. In his 69 games with the Tigers, Rothenberg recorded 61 hits, 17 doubles, 12 home runs and 52 RBI. He drew 41 walks and posted a .239 average at the plate.
Marcus Johnson – Charleston RiverDogs (A | Tampa Bay Rays)
Johnson appeared in 26 games while starting 24 in 2023. He posted a 5-6 record on the mound with a 3.74 ERA in 130 innings of work. Johnson tallied 114 strikeouts and a 1.16 WHIP.
Billy Seidl – Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (A | Chicago White Sox)
Seidl appeared in 47 games for the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers during the 2023 season, posting a 5-4 record on the mound. In his 53.1 innings of work, Seidl struck out 53 batters and posted a 1.44 WHIP.
Jimmy Loper – St. Lucie Mets (A | New York Mets)
Loper appeared in 24 games for the St. Lucie Mets in 2023, recording a 1-3 record in his 44.1 innings of work. He posted a 3.86 ERA, picking up four saves and striking out 55 batters.
Henry Williams – Columbia Fireflies (A | Kansas City Royals)
Williams appeared in 17 games over two levels of the Kansas City Royals organization, posting a 3-6 record on the mound. While in Columbia, Williams posted a 3.38 ERA with a 2-1 record on the mound. He tallied 66.1 innings of work and struck out 63 batters.
Jay Beshears – Lake Elsinore Storm (A | San Diego Padres)
Beshears appeared in 31 games across the Padres rookie ball team and Lake Elsinore. The sixth-round draft pick in 2023, tallied 25 hits, 14 runs, one home run and 13 RBI.
Alex Mooney – Lynchburg Hillcats (A | Cleveland Guardians)
Mooney appeared in 17 games this season for the Lynchburg Hillcats, after being selected in the seventh round by the Guardians. The former Blue Devils shortstop tallied 10 hits, eight runs, four RBI and swiped four bases.
Adam Boucher – FCL Rays (Rookie Ball | Tampa Bay Rays)
Boucher appeared in two games during the rookie ball season for the FCL Rays, posting a 1-0 record on the mound with a 4.50 ERA. The righty worked two innings and punched out five in his two professional outings.
Luke Fox – ACL Dodgers (Rookie Ball | Los Angeles Dodgers)
Fox is still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery which he had at the beginning of last season.
Chris Proctor – Lancaster (Independent Ball)
Proctor appeared in 62 games during his independent ball season, posting a .272 average at the plate. He collected 43 hits, 34 runs, four home runs and 25 RBI. He added 13 stolen bases and walked 11 times.
Chris Davis – Birmingham Beavers (Independent Ball)
Davis appeared in 45 games for the Beavers posting a .325 average at the plate. He tallied 53 hits, 35 runs, 30 RBI, seven home runs and 11 stolen bases.
Karl Blum – York (Independent Ball)
Blum appeared in 34 games between two different independent organizations. He worked 28 innings and struck out 43 batters.
Giovanni DiGiacomo – Great Falls (Independent Ball)
DiGiacomo signed with Great Falls of the independent league and appeared in 37 games. During that time, he posted a .312 ERA, collecting 34 hits, seven doubles, one home run and 14 RBI.
James Marvel - Nippon Ham (Japanese League)
Marvel played over in Japan this past season, working 39 innings on the mound. He struck out 22 batters and tallied a 2-3 record on the bump.
