DURHAM - After averaging 23.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in Duke's games against Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech last week,
Kyle Filipowski has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week in men's basketball for the third week in a row and seventh time this season. Filipowski has reached double figures in seven straight games and in 19 of Duke's 21 games this season.
Last Monday at Virginia Tech, Filipowski scored a career-high 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting while also grabbing 10 rebounds for his fourth-consecutive double-double. The Westtown, N.Y., native has 10 double-doubles this year, which lead all Division-I freshmen. He then scored a game-high 18 points on Saturday at Georgia Tech on 6-of-9 shooting while securing seven rebounds. Of his team-best 17 rebounds last week, 14 came on the defensive glass. Filipowski was a part of Duke's defensive effort that held Georgia Tech to a season-low 43 points, and Duke's 43-point win (86-43) marked its second-largest ACC road win in program history.
Filipowski is the only freshman nationally averaging better than 15 points and nine rebounds this season. He leads all ACC freshmen and is eighth overall in the league for points per game in conference play (16.7) and leads all ACC freshmen and is sixth overall in the league for rebounds per game in conference play (9.7).
Filipowski's honor marks Duke's ACC-leading 153rd all-time Rookie of the Week selection. Over the last 10 seasons (since the start of 2013-14), Duke has had an ACC Rookie of the Week in 81 of a possible 165 weeks (49.1%). Twenty-two different Blue Devils have won the award at least once in that time. The Blue Devils' 153 all-time Rookie of the Week awards lead the ACC by 56. With his seventh Rookie of the Week selection this season, Filipowski is tied with
Marvin Bagley III for sixth-most in a season in league history.
