DURHAM – The No. 16 Duke women's basketball team made a late-game push, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Devils dropped a 70-57 decision at No. 24 Florida State Sunday afternoon at the Tucker Civic Center.
Shayeann Day-Wilson paced Duke (18-3, 8-2 ACC) for the fourth consecutive game, tallying all 14 of her points in the fourth quarter.
Vanessa de Jesus added nine points, four boards, a career-best four steals and a team-high three assists off the bench while
Reigan Richardson chipped in eight points four rebounds.
Kennedy Brown tallied double-digit rebounds for the first time this season and ninth time of her career with a game-high 11 boards.
Florida State (10-5, 8-3 ACC) was led by Makayla Timpson's 21 point, 10 rebound double-double.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Florida State jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before the Blue Devils responded with a 6-0 run to surge ahead by one.
- Ashlon Jackson added a free throw and de Jesus cashed in a triple from straightaway to join the Duke first quarter scoring efforts, but the home team held a three-point lead (15-12) after 10 minutes of play.
- After FSU extended its lead to nine early in the quarter, Duke responded with a 9-0 spurt featuring scores from de Jesus, Celeste Taylor, Jackson and Jordyn Oliver to deadlock the score at 22 with 2:54 to go in the period.
- The home team scored the final eight points of the quarter, however, and take a 30-22 lead into the break.
- Five Duke players combined for the Blue Devils' 12 third quarter points, led by Richardson (4) and Mia Heide (3).
- The Blue Devils closed the game strong as they outscored Florida State 23-19 in the final period, with Day-Wilson netting all 14 of her points in the frame – tying Duke's second-highest fourth quarter point output for the second time in four games.
GAME NOTES
- Duke's record now stands at 18-3 overall and 8-2 in ACC play.
- Sophomore Shayeann Day-Wilson reached double figure points for the fourth straight game and fifth time in the last six contests.
- Day-Wilson scored all 14 of her points in the fourth quarter, which ties Duke's second-highest fourth quarter point output all-time. This is the sophomore's second time achieving this feat in the last four games, having also done so against North Carolina.
- Junior Vanessa de Jesus tallied a third of the Blue Devils bench scoring with nine points and also accounted for half of Duke's steals with four thefts – the latter marking a career high.
- Kennedy Brown grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds – the ninth double-digit rebounding effort of her career.
- Duke rejected 11 shots during the game with four players tallying multiple rejections – Kennedy Brown (3), Ashlon Jackson (3), Mia Heide (2) and Celeste Taylor (2).
- All 10 Duke players that played in the game contributed in the scoring column.
- The Blue Devils scored 23 points off 17 Florida State turnovers and outscored the Seminoles off the bench (26-20) and second chance points (15-9).
