DURHAM – Duke men's soccer midfielder
Peter Stroud has signed with New York Red Bulls on an MLS Homegrown contract, the club announced on Saturday. The contract is for three years, with options in 2026 and 2027.
The Chester, N.J., native was the top player in the country in both TopDrawerSoccer's preseason and midseason Top 100 and provided a steady presence in Duke's midfield all season long in 2022. He finished the year tied for second-most points on the team while also setting a new career-high for assists in a regular season with five.
Stroud was named All-America First Team and became the first player in ACC history to win back-to-back ACC Midfield of the Year honors while also being named First Team All-ACC and All-South Region First Team for the second consecutive season. He finished as runner-up for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the first Blue Devils player to be invited to the banquet in St. Louis as a finalist since
Andrew Wenger won the coveted trophy in 2012.
He made 56 total appearances during his career for the Blue Devils, making 55 starts. Stroud played 88 minutes or more in 17 of Duke's 19 matches in 2022 and recorded his 50th career start, in his 51st appearance, in Duke's match against Pittsburgh this season.Â
He helped lead the Blue Devils to their first undefeated regular season since 1999 and Duke's first appearance in the national quarterfinals for the first time since 2006. The Blue Devils were ranked third by United Soccer Coaches in the organization's postseason top-25, the highest postseason ranking for Duke since being ranked first in 1982.
Prior to his arrival in Durham, he first spent time as a member of the New York Red Bulls Academy, making 10 appearances for the Red Bulls U23's. He then went overseas for two years, playing for West Ham United after joining the club in the summer of 2018 and playing for the U18 and U23 sides. He made his debut with the Irons at age 16 in a 1-0 victory over Swansea City and made his first appearance as a sub against the same club in a Premier League 2 match two months later. Stroud was also a fixture in the U.S. Youth National Teams, earning 15 caps with the U15 squad and 15 for the U17 side.
During his first season in Durham, he started all 17 games and was named to the All-ACC Third Team All-Freshman Team. He was voted Duke's Most Valuable Player and finished second on the team with three assists.
As a sophomore, Stroud was named ACC Midfielder of the Year, Third Team All-America, All-ACC First Team, All-South Region First Team and to the ACC All-Tournament Team. He played in all 20 games, starting 19 of them, recording four goals and four assists for 12 total points.
