NEWTON, Mass. –Fourth-ranked Maryland scored six unanswered goals to hand No. 18 Duke a 7-2 setback in field hockey action at the ACC/Big 10 Cup hosted by Boston College.
The Terrapins finish their weekend 2-0 and improve to 4-0 overall, while Duke drops to 2-2 overall on the year. All four of Duke's opponents this season were ranked in the top 20, including two in the top-five.
The Blue Devils held a 1-0 lead early on, but Maryland scored six unanswered for a 6-1 advantage en route to the five-goal victory.
How it Happened
- Duke sophomore Issy Carey gave the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead in the third minute. The England native forced Maryland into a defensive miscue and drew a foul inside the shooting circle to earn the game's first penalty corner. Charlotte van Oirschot took the Hannah Miller insert and Carey hit it into the right side of the cage for the 1-0 advantage.
- Duke was dangerous in the first quarter with dynamic counter attacks on offense and solid defense in its own third, including three saves by Duke goalie Piper Hampsch to head into the second stanza with the 1-0 lead.
- The second quarter was all Maryland as the Terrapins outshot Duke 5-0 and scored twice. The equalizer came off a penalty corner when Hope Rose's shot deflected off a Duke stick and it into the cage past Hampsch. The go-ahead score was credited to Maura Verleg on a shot that appeared to be outside the shooting circle, but stood after an official review.
- Maryland tacked on another goal late in the third quarter for a 3-1 lead and added three more in a span of 6:58 in the fourth for a 6-1 advantage.
- Miller scored her first goal of the season late in the final stanza, coming off the endline after inserting a penalty corner and deflecting in a shot from Carey.
- Hampsch finished her afternoon with eight saves. She completed the weekend with 17 saves.
- Maryland held a 22-3 advantage in shots and won the penalty corner battle 8-3. Christina Calandra made one save for the Terrapins in goal.
Notes
- Issy Carey registered her first career goal. Carey missed all of the 2021 season to injury and saw her first field hockey action in 18 months when she debuted against the Scarlet Knights.
- Piper Hampsch pushed her career saves total to 189, leaving her 11 shy of becoming the 10th Duke goaltender to reach the 200 mark.
