DURHAM – Duke baseball completed its first exhibition of the fall on Thursday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, taking on NC State in a 14-inning contest. The Blue Devils pitching staff combined to toss 21 strikeouts and worked five consecutive hitless innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior right-handed pitcher Adam Boucher started for the Blue Devils on Thursday, working two innings of one hit baseball with three strikeouts.
- Freshman left-handed pitcher Andrew Healy took the mound in the fourth inning, striking out two batters and scattering two hits.
- Freshman pitchers Gabriel Nard and Owen Proksch both worked two innings against the Wolfpack, combining for one hit and three strikeouts. He also worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the sixth.
- Junior transfer Jay Beshears drove in the first run for the Blue Devils, lifting a sacrifice fly to right field to score Alex Mooney from third base. Mooney led off the inning with a walk, before going first to third on a single by Luke Storm. Mooney and graduate transfer Cole Hebble rolled an inning ending double play in the ninth to escape a jam.
- Freshman right-hander Kassius Thomas worked an inning for the Blue Devils, striking out two batters in his first action.
- Sophomore outfielder Devin Obee finished the night 2-for-5 at the plate, singling and doubling in back-to-back at bats.
- Graduate transfer Josh Solomon hit a solo home run to right field. He finished the evening with a walk and an RBI.
- Freshman left-hander James Tallon struck out the side in his one inning of work.

QUOTES
- "Overall, we pitched well period. We had one bad inning in the first "game" and one bad inning at the end, but I thought all in all we pitched exceptionally well against an offensive club." – Head coach Chris Pollard on how the young arms fared on Thursday evening.
- "We are really pleased with the way we caught, received, and threw the baseball. I thought our guys behind the plate made our pitchers better. We picked it and threw it well. [Alex] Mooney made a great play on the double play turn. [Josh] Solomon made a really good play off the wall considering it was his first time ever being at this ballpark. For the first time out of the gates, we have been practicing for about a week now, we took some good swings." – Coach Pollard on the defensive success on Thursday night.
UP NEXT
- Duke baseball travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina in their final exhibition of the fall. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Oct. 14.
