NEWTON, Mass. – Top-ranked Northwestern scored a goal in the first and third quarters to hand 18th-ranked Duke field hockey its first setback of the 2022 season. The Blue Devils had one goal disallowed and a penalty stroke saved in the loss at the ACC/BIG Cup hosted by Boston College.
The Wildcats improve to 3-0, while Duke falls to 2-1. Each of Duke's first three opponents this season were ranked in the top 20.
How it Happened
- Northwestern opened the scoring with a goal in the ninth as Ana Medina Garcia fired in a shot off a Wildcat penalty corner. The Wildcats added a security score in the 42nd minute when Baekers got loose on a breakaway and put it past Duke goalie Piper Hampsch.
- Hampsch recorded four first-quarter saves to keep the Blue Devils within striking distance heading into the second half trailing 1-0. The sophomore backstop corralled a season-high nine saves overall in the 60 minutes.
- Duke senior defender Mary Harkins had a great look at the cage on a penalty corner, but Annabel Skubisz was there to block the ball over the goal.
- Blue Devil sophomore Grace Norair appeared to equalize the score early in the third quarter, but the goal was disallowed due to a violation in the penalty circle prior to the shot.
- The Wildcats controlled much of the action following Duke's called back goal, outshooting the Blue Devils 10-4 in the second half.
- Duke created dangerous opportunities in the penalty circle in the final minutes of the fourth stanza as Hannah Miller rocketed a shot wide and Josephine Palde had a close look denied by Skubisz.
- Northwestern goaltender Skubisz finished with four saves in the game, including one on a penalty stroke.
- The Wildcats held an 18-9 advantage in shots and won the penalty corner battle 9-5.
Notes
- Hampsch's nine saves push her career total to 181, leaving her 19 shy of becoming the 10th Duke goaltender to reach 200 career saves.
- Rookie Paige Bitting earned her first career start versus Northwestern.
Up Next
- Duke will use Saturday to rest and recover before returning to the field to battle No. 4 Maryland at 12 p.m., Sept. 4. The Blue Devils make their home debut Sept. 9 against Appalachian State at 6 p.m.
