DURHAM β Coming off a pair of top-20 wins to start the season, the Duke field hockey team is set to square off against a pair of top-five opponents at the annual ACC/Big 10 Cup this weekend at Boston College. Duke battles No. 1 Northwestern Sept. 2 and No. 4 Maryland Sept. 4.

The Opening Hit
- Duke opened the 2002 season with a pair of top-20 victories. The Blue Devils defeated No. 6 Rutgers 2-1 in a penalty stroke shootout (3-2) and edged No. 16 Saint Joseph's, 1-0, in double overtime. It marks the first time since 2009 Duke has posted a pair of top-20 wins to start a season.
- The Blue Devils were marathon women on opening weekend, playing a total of 157:38 in a two-day span. Duke went the full 80 minutes Friday afternoon, eventually winning in a shootout, and played 77:38 Saturday afternoon against Saint Joseph's.
- Piper Hampsch was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week and the PNC Achievers Duke Student-Athlete of the Week following her performance in Piscataway. She finished the weekend with 11 saves and had three stops in the penalty stroke shootout against Rutgers.
- Sophomore Josephine Palde registered the overtime winner against Saint Joseph's her second career goal and second career game winner.
- With the win against Rutgers, Pam Bustin became the 19th Division I head coach to reach 300 career wins. She currently ranks 11th on the wins chart among active Division I coaches.

Scouting Northwestern
- Northwestern, the reigning 2021 champions, opened the 2022 season with commanding 5-1 and 4-1 victories against No. 22 Maine and No. 25 UMass, respectively. Bente Baekers was named the Big 10 Offensive Player of the Week after scoring six goals on the opening weekend. Peyton Halsey had two goals and two assists, while Kayla Blas had four assists. The Wildcats earned 23 penalty corners in the two games and held their opponents to 13 shots. Annabel Skubisz made two saves in her two starts.
- Baekers, Blas and Maddie Zimmer all were named to the Big Ten Field Hockey Players to Watch List. Baekers and Zimmer both garnered All-Big Ten first team honors in 2021, while Zimmer was the NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player in leading the Wildcats to the NCAA title. Blas was a second-team honoree after leading the team with 12 assists last season. Skubisz is back to anchor the backline after posting a .782 save percentage and a 0.97 goals against average.
Scouting Maryland
- Maryland enters the ACC/Big 10 Cup weekend with a 2-0 record, besting Drexel, 7-1, and Stanford, 1-0. Hope Rose paced the offense with two goals and two assists, while freshman Sophie Klautz had two goals to earn the Big 10 Freshman of the Week award.
- The Terrapins return a host of talented players from their 15-7 season, including the 2021 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Hope Rose. She led all Maryland freshman with 10 goals and 24 points. Bib Donraadt, Emma DeBerdine joined Rose on the Big Ten Players to Watch list in 2022. DeBerdine comes into her senior season after being named to the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team over the summer.
Series Histories
- Duke meets Northwestern for the 13th time overall and for the ninth time in the past 10 seasons. The Blue Devils are 8-4 overall against the Wildcats and 6-1 in the past seven meetings. Northwestern owns the most recent victory, a 3-0 win in Durham last season.
- Duke and Maryland square off for the 52nd time overall and for the 12th time in the previous 10 years. The Terrapins have dominated the series, sporting a 35-13-3 record against the Blue Devils. Duke defeated Maryland in 2019 and is 5-3 in the past eight outings.

- Northwestern scored in the seventh minute and added two more, while holding Duke to only three shots in a 3-0 victory at Williams Field in Durham. Piper Hampsch made eight saves in the setback for Duke.

- The Terrapins netted two goals in the first 10 minutes and never looked back en route to a 4-0 victory. Bibi Donraadt had two, while Hope Rose had one. Duke took four shots. Hampsch and Grace Brightbill split time in the cage, making three and four saves, respectively.
Hey We Know Her!
- There will be a familiar face on the other side of the field when Duke takes on Maryland Sunday. Former Blue Devil Leah Crouse joined the Terrapins this season as a graduate student transfer. In her four seasons at Duke, Crouse played in 67 games with 44 starts. She scored 18 goals and added 16 assists for 52 career points.
