DURHAM – A scrappy 90 minutes of play between fifth-ranked Duke (4-0-1, 1-0-1) and rival North Carolina (3-2-1, 0-1-1) ended with the teams tied at one, in front of 3,155 fans on Friday night.
Amir Daley scored his first goal of the year, and seven Blue Devils played the full 90 minutes to help Duke remain undefeated in the 2022 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke's offense was on the attack early on, logging two corners in the first six minutes of the game and putting their first shot on goal in the seventh minute.
- The Blue Devils opened the scoring courtesy of Daley. The junior defender put home his first goal of the year, assisted by Ruben Mesalles and Nick Pariano.
- The Tar Heels had a quick response, scoring just 29 seconds later to draw level with Duke once again.
- Both teams sought a go-ahead goal for the remainder of the game but were turned away by strong defenses and solid goalkeeping.
- The Blue Devils remained on the offensive for much of the contest, finishing the game with 10 total shots, including four on goal.
- Duke's defense proved capable once again, limiting the Tar Heels to just four total shots.
- The rivalry made its presence known, with 29 total fouls being committed and five yellow cards shown.
NOTES
QUOTES
- "It was one of those nights. I thought we played really well overall. We got burned on one of the mistakes we made, and they made us pay. That's soccer. That's how it goes sometimes." – Duke head coach John Kerr
- "They've always been a good team, especially recently they've had a few results that didn't go their way, so they had that extra motivation. We matched that motivation, and they always have a good team and credit to them for coming out and giving us a good game." – Duke M/F Shakur Mohammed on the rivalry game.
- "Yeah, a little bit. It was 1-1, we were obviously the home team, so you'll be a little more aggressive, taking energy from the crowd and everything. We got a second wind I feel like, and it just hit at the right time. Tried to get forward as much as I could, and I thought I created a couple of chances. Unfortunately, they didn't find the back of the net but on to Elon on Tuesday." – Duke midfielder Peter Stroud on adjustments he made at halftime.
UP NEXT
