PISCATAWAY, N.J. –Duke sophomore
Josephine Palde scored with 2:22 remaining in the second overtime to give the 18th-ranked Blue Devil field hockey team a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 16 Saint Joseph's. The Blue Devils finish the opening weekend at the Battle on the Banks hosted by Rutgers with a pair of overtime wins.
Senior forward
Hannah Miller provided the pass to the streaking Palde down the right side. Palde got into the circle and beat the Saint Joseph goaltender for her second career goal.
How it Happened
- Duke outshot Saint Joseph's 15-7 for the game, but it was the final shot of the afternoon that made the difference as Palde netted her second career game-winning goal.
- The Hawks had arguably the best scoring chance of regulation play on a penalty corner late in the third quarter. Saint Joseph's had Piper Hampsch beat, but Duke defender Mary Harkins was protecting the goal line, knocking it down out of the air for a defensive save and keeping the game tied.
- Hampsch also had a pair of crucial back-to-back saves on a penalty corner in the third quarter, laying out to keep the Hawks off the board. Hampsch finished with five saves.
- Duke dominated action in the first half, keeping Saint Joseph's without a shot and to just one penalty corner.
- The Blue Devils got off on the front foot in the opening quarter, spending a good portion of the 15 minutes in the Hawk's defensive third and creating dangerous opportunities in the circle. Duke outshot the Hawks 4-0 in the period and won three penalty corners to SJU's one. Saint Joseph goaltender Robin Bleekemolen made two saves with her blocker on the penalty corners to keep Duke off the board. She finished with nine saves.
- Duke kept its foot on the gas in the second quarter, controlling the run of play. The Blue Devils won three more penalty corners in the period and nearly scored with just under three minutes remaining, but a save from Bleekemolen and a block by a Saint Joseph defender sent the two teams into halftime scoreless.
- The Blue Devils outshot Saint Joseph's 12-4 in regulation and had nine penalty corners, but couldn't find the back of the cage en route to a second consecutive overtime game.

- Duke started the 2022 season with consecutive overtime games for the first time since 2011.
- The Blue Devils improve to 53-57-7 in overtime games and 9-16-1 in double overtime contests.
