PISCATAWAY, N.J. β Duke field hockey head coach
Pam Bustin captured her 300th career win as the 18th-ranked Blue Devils upended No. 8 Rutgers, 2-1, in a shootout victory Friday afternoon at Bauer Track and Field Stadium.
The Blue Devils and Scarlet Knights battled to a 1-1 draw after 80 minutes of play, setting up the penalty shootout to decide the winner. Duke scored on its final three shots, while goaltender
Piper Hampsch made three stops to give the Blue Devils the 3-2 edge.
How it Happened
- Rookie Brynn Crouse gave the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, knocking in a rebound off a blocked shot from Josephine Palde on the penalty corner.
- Rutgers equalized 39 seconds later as Duke was caught in possession out of the back. Duke goaltender Piper Hampsch came off her line to clear it out, but Rachel Houston got the loose ball and fired it into the back of the cage.
- Scoring for the Blue Devils in the shootout were Josie Varney, Shelby Bumgarner and Josephine Palde.
- Duke controlled much of the possession in the opening 30 minutes, outshooting Rutgers 9-3. The Blue Devils put seven on cage, but Rutgers goalie Sophia Howard did well to keep Duke at bay.
- The third quarter was evenly fought as both teams created quality scoring opportunities. Duke's Kelsey Resnick nearly tallied her first career goal, but had her shot blocked wide of the cage. The Scarlet Knights had three shots in the quarter, but Duke's defense was up to the task in not allowing any to get through to Hampsch on frame.
- Duke, once again, found its way into the circle early in the fourth quarter, but Howard did well to disrupt the play and keep the Blue Devils from getting a clear look at the cage. Howard finished her afternoon with 10 saves.
- Duke defended a Rutgers penalty corner with three seconds left in regulation as flyer Josie Varney came out of the cage to disrupt play and force overtime.
- Rutgers earned a penalty corner early in the first overtime, but couldn't connect. Hampsch came up with two massive saves midway through the first extra session, keeping the Blue Devils alive.
- The Scarlet Knights held a narrow 5-4 edge in shots in the overtime periods.
