LOS ANGELES -- Three more Duke baseball players were drafted on Tuesday as the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft concluded in Los Angeles.
The selections Tuesday of 3B
Graham Pauley (13th round by San Diego), RHP
Billy Seidl (15th round by Chicago White Sox) and RHP
Jimmy Loper (16th round by New York Mets) bring the Blue Devils' total to five drafted players this season, in addition to signee SSÂ
Cole Young, who was selected Sunday with the 21st overall pick by the Padres.
It marks the second consecutive season that at least five Blue Devils have been taken in a single draft and the fifth time that has happened at Duke since the 2015 season. It happened just once in program history before 2015.
Four of Duke's five players drafted were pitchers, tying the second most pitchers in a single draft for the Blue Devils. It matched the number in 2019 and was one shy of the record five pitchers taken in 2015.
The trio of draft picks on Tuesday took Duke's total selections of Blue Devils to 91 all-time and 37 under head coach
Chris Pollard.
Graham Pauley – 3B -- San Diego Padres – Round: 13; Pick: 390
Pauley, just the third Blue Devil third baseman to be drafted, started all 54 games this season and batted a team-leading .292 with 16 doubles, nine home runs and 33 RBI. The junior from Milton, Ga., drew 32 walks against 28 strikeouts for a .402 OBP while slugging .495. His 62 hits and 19 multi-hit games were both team highs.
"I'm incredibly proud of Graham," said Pollard. "Anyone that knows him, knows how hard he has worked to be in this position. It's a true testament to resilience and we're excited to follow his climb."
Billy Seidl – RHP -- Chicago White Sox – Round: 15; Pick: 461
Seidl made 17 appearances, including nine starts, for Duke in 2022 and finished with a 2-5 record and 6.80 ERA in 43.2 innings pitched. The junior from Wellesley, Mass., tallied 55 strikeouts and limited batters to a .236 batting average. He registered 11.34 strikeouts per game helping the Duke staff set a program record with 10.60 strikeouts per nine innings.
"We talk a lot in our program about being an energy giver and Billy oozes selfless energy," said Pollard. "A process-driven leader, he has worked hard to not only make himself better, but also works to make people around him better. His energy will be missed, but so thrilled for him to start this journey."
Jimmy Loper – RHP – New York Mets – Round: 16; Pick: 479
Loper made 24 appearances out of the bullpen, primarily as the program's closer as a senior in 2022, and posted a 4.44 ERA with a 3-3 record and the ACC's sixth-most saves (five). He fanned 64 against just 17 walks and 45 hits in 48.2 innings. The Chesapeake, Va., native ranked third on the team with 11.84 strikeouts per nine innings as Duke set a program record as a team (10.60) and ranked top-15 nationally.
"Jimmy has grown every year in this program," said Pollard. "It's been fun to see him overcome injury to become one of the best arms in the ACC this year. After last year's championship run, he stayed in Durham and worked tirelessly with strength coach
Dan Perlmutter to build his body. The result was a jump in fastball to the mid 90s. He throws a ton of strikes and could climb quickly in the Mets organization."
