LOS ANGELES – Duke baseball signee
Cole Young was selected with the 21st overall pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 2022 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Sunday night.
Young, a shortstop from Wexford, Pa., who attended North Allegheny High School, entered with the draft with a top-25 draft ranking from MLB.com and went in the first round to the Mariners.
"I am thrilled for Cole as he becomes the fourth Duke signee to go in the first round over the last six years," said Duke head coach
Chris Pollard. "He has worked incredibly hard to be in this position, and I have no doubt he has a very bright professional career in front of him."
As a senior this spring, the left-handed infielder batted .433 with 14 extra-base hits and a .564 on-base percentage. He struck out four times in just 78 plate appearances and defensively, committed four errors in 58 chances for a .931 fielding percentage.
Young was one of three incoming Duke commits to be named to Perfect Game's Preseason All-America First Team, alongside RHP
Kassius Thomas (Northridge, Calf.) and LHP
Oliver Santos (Newport Coast, Calf.).
In addition to Young at No. 20, MLB.com listed two Blue Devils among the top 250 prospects heading into the 2022 draft with RHP
Henry Williams checking in at No. 81 and RHP
Marcus Johnson at No. 139. Thomas was ranked No. 118. The 2022 MLB Draft continues Monday and Tuesday.
