DURHAM – Deja Davis was 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs, while
Peyton St. George pitched another complete-game shutout to lead No. 12-seeded Duke to a 5-0 victory over Liberty in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament Durham Regional on Saturday at the Duke Softball Stadium.
The victory puts Duke (43-8) in the regional championship for the second consecutive year and the Blue Devils will play on Sunday at 2 p.m. vs. Georgia, one win away from advancing to next week's Super Regional. Liberty (44-17) suffers its first loss of the double-elimination tournament.
St. George, who has not been scored upon in two games of the Durham Regional, fanned five over her seven-inning complete game to improve to 22-3 this season. The graduate student from Mechanicsville, Va., was boosted by three early runs and worked herself around Liberty traffic in the late innings to extend her shutout streak to 14 innings.
"A great game today, I'm as proud of my team today as I've been all year with their resilience and adjustments," said head coach
Marissa Young. "When they don't have a great day, they don't let that carry over to the next game and I don't think we were at our best offensively yesterday. To see them come out and make the adjustments they needed to do to score runs and for Peyton [St. George] to bounce back and throw another complete game, dominating, I couldn't be more proud."
Duke pounced early, grabbing an early 2-0 lead in the second thanks to
Francesca Frelick's RBI single that drove in
Kristina Foreman and an error that allowed
Caroline Jacobsen to score from third. Davis made it 3-0 in the third after she led off the inning with a double to the left-field gap, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on Foreman's sac fly to deep right that nearly left the yard.
Back-to-back solo home runs in the fourth inning from
Jameson Kavel and Davis made it 5-0 and capped the Blue Devils' scoring.
After knocking off Georgia on Friday, the Flames would not go quietly Saturday and loaded the bases with one out in the sixth thanks to singles from Devyn Howard, Kara Canetto and Lou Allan. St. George was up to the task, getting a shallow fly ball to center for the second out and fanning Alexis Soto to end the threat.
"In those moments, you have to love the game and love the pressure," said St. George. "Coaches do a really good job of recreating that in practice so that when you get in the game it's 'let's stay calm and not make the moment bigger than it is, and just have fun.' We're not going to change anything we've been doing all game. So it's enjoying the moment, knowing that's why you love the game so much and those situations. Getting out of them is just being able to celebrate with the people around you."
Davis, Jacobsen and Frelick each had two of Duke's seven hits, while the Blue Devils' played error-free behind St. George for the second straight game.
Emily Kirby lasted just one inning in the circle for Liberty, allowing two hits and two runs to absorb the loss (14-6). Raigan Bachman had two of the Flames six hits.
