DURHAM – Head coach
Chris Pollard earned his 300
th win as the Duke head coach as the Blue Devils defeated Davidson, 11-2, on Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field.
Â
The Blue Devils (22-29) manufactured double-digit runs in various ways, scoring twice via hits, three times on errors, twice on balks, once on a hit by pitch, once on a walk, once via a wild pitch and once on a stolen base. Duke held Davidson (40-10) to just three hits in the game.
Â
Graduate student
Chris Crabtree led Duke at the plate. Crabtree finished 2-for-3, hitting a pair of doubles and scoring two runs. Classmate
Trevor Johnson went 1-for-3 at the plate and stole three bases. He stole home in the fifth inning.
Â
The Blue Devil pitching staff was strong in a planned staff day. Eight Blue Devil pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and no walks after the first batter of the game. Duke limited a potent Davidson offense to just three hits and one earned run.
Â
Right-handed senior
Cooper Stinson started on the hill for Duke, making his 47
th career start. Stinson was a planned opener, allowing one run on one hit in one inning pitched. Senior southpaw
Aaron Beasley earned his first career win on the mound, pitching two innings and allowing just one hit.
Â
Davidson jumped on the Blue Devils quick, scoring a run in the top of the first inning on a walk and a double.
Â
Duke responded soon after, scoring one in the bottom of the third to tie the game, 1-1. In the third, graduate student
Chris Crabtree opened the inning with a double before moving to third on a fly out. Duke earned a hit by pitch and a walk to set up bases loaded with two outs. After falling to a 0-2 count, senior
RJ Schreck battled back and won a 10-pitch at-bat with an RBI walk.
Â
The Blue Devils took the lead and added to it in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring five runs on two hits across the two innings. Sophomore
Alex Stone singled to score a run, before a throwing error brought home Johnson in the same play. Schreck drew a hit by pitch to plate a run later in the fourth to close the inning.
Â
In the fifth, sophomore
Luke Storm advanced to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on an error. With runners on first and third and two outs, graduate student
Wil Hoyle attempted to steal second and drew the throw to allow Johnson to steal home and add a run, 6-1.
Â
After Davidson scored an unearned run in the sixth inning, Duke added five in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach, 11-2. Johnson singled and Crabtree doubled to put runners in scoring position and Davidson had consecutive balks to score the runs. Later in the inning, junior
Graham Pauley hit a double to right center that was misplayed by the Davidson defense to score a pair of runs. Pauley later scored on a wild pitch.
Â
Junior
Billy Seidl and sophomore
Josh Allen were also strong in relief in an inning of work. Seidl fanned three while Allen tallied two strikeouts.
Â
Duke concludes the regular season this weekend as the Blue Devils travel to Blacksburg, Va., for a three-game series at third-ranked Virginia Tech. The opening game of the series is set for Thursday at 4 p.m., at English Field at Union Park.
