CARY, N.C. – Senior
Quinn Riley was the individual medalist and the Duke men's golf team won the team championship as the Blue Devils swept the titles at the Stitch Intercollegiate, which concluded Saturday at Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Cary.
Riley posted three rounds in the red, including his final-round 1-under 71 to secure a one-stroke victory for his first career tournament win. The Blue Devils finished three clear of Notre Dame and NC State for the team title, winning the Stitch for the second time (2018) and securing the 25th team title under head coach
Jamie Green.
Duke closes its regular-season tournament schedule with a victory and will have a match-play dual versus NC State on April 15 at the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh before the ACC Championship begins April 21 at Watersound Club in Panama City Beach, Fla.
"I'm thrilled for Quinn to have this happen right here in his backyard," said Green. "I'm elated for him and it's a good thing for our team. When you have a senior that's leading the way and winning golf tournaments, the other guys say, 'OK we'll follow right behind you.'"
Duke shot a 3-under 285 on Saturday and was the clubhouse leader at 3-under 861 with other teams still on the course. When play finished, the Blue Devils would be the only remaining squad in red numbers for the 54-hole event. Runners-up Notre Dame and host NC State each finished the tournament even par. Georgia Southern (+11) and College of Charleston (+17) rounded out the top five of the 13-team field.
"It's very special," said the Raleigh native Riley, who attended Ravenscroft School. "Seeing my family and friends here and to get it done on my home course feels great. I didn't have my best game, but I was able to get it done against some great players. Our team is moving in the right direction, and this is really good for momentum heading into the ACC Championship."
Riley was able to hold off the field thanks to a final round that saw the senior birdie three holes, including the par-4 10th and the par-4 13th for a 1-under 71 on Saturday. He opened with a 70 on Friday and posted another 71 in the second round. He and runner-up Easton Paxton from NC State (71-71-71) were the only golfers in the field to card three consecutive rounds under par.
Riley's 4-under 212 was the winning score, followed by a four-way tie for second at 3-under 213 that included Paxton, Notre Dame's Davis Chatfield and Taichi Kho and State's Maximillian Steinlechner.
The Blue Devils boasted four players inside the top 10 as freshman
Kelly Chinn finished sixth at 2-under 214 (71-72-71), while freshmen
Luke Sample and
John Peters each finished tied for 10th at 2-over 218. Sample followed his opening-round 76 with consecutive rounds of 71, while Peters, who was playing individually, shot 75 Saturday after rounds of 72 and 71.
Sophomore
Ian Siebers placed tied for 24th at 6-over 222 (73-77-72), while classmate
Jimmy Zheng was tied for 29th at 7-over 223 (71-77-75).
Also playing individually for the Blue Devils, sophomore
Daniel Uranga was tied for 72nd at 22-over with graduate student
Qi wen Wong finishing tied for 75th at 25-over.
Duke's tournament win is the 87th in program history and the first since the Blue Devils captured the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate during the 2019-20 campaign. Riley is the 77th Blue Devil to win individual medalist honors, and the first since
Steven DiLisio won the Georgia Southern Individual Collegiate in 2018-19. For the first time since
Chandler Eaton led the Blue Devils to the 2018 Nike Golf Collegiate title did Duke have both individual and team medalist in the same event.
