POTCHEFSTROOM, South Africa – Duke field hockey's
Josie Varney and
Leah Crouse are going to continue their run with the United States U-21 Women's National Team as they head to the quarterfinals of the FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup. The tournament is being played at North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
In addition to Varney and Crouse donning the red, white and blue, former Blue Devil Kiki Rozemeijer has helped the world's No. 1 Netherlands squad win Pool A with three commanding victories. Rozemeijer and
Netherlands will go up against South Africa in the opening quarterfinal, April 8 at 3 a.m. (ET).
The United States captured a 4-0 win over rival Canada to clinch one of the quarterfinal spots. Team USA also picked up a 5-0 victory against Zimbabwe after opening the tournament with a setback to Netherlands.
Crouse started in the final match of pool play against Canada, while Varney came off the bench for all three contests. In the second match of the tournament versus Zimbabwe, Varney had a handful of good looks at the cage that skipped just wide.
Both also were instrumental in helping hold Zimbabwe and Canada scoreless in the two U.S. victories.
Rozemeijer started all three games for Netherlands and scored a goal versus Zimbabwe.
The United States is set to take on England in the quarterfinal, Friday, April 8 at 9:45 a.m. (ET). The winner of the quarterfinal advances to the semifinal to take on the winner between Argentina and Germany. A loss to England pushed the U.S., into a consolation bracket against the loser in the aforementioned quarterfinal matchup.
