RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 11 Duke's Second Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight boats each won their heat on Saturday and the Blue Devils finished second in the team standings to wrap up the Lake Wheeler Invitational.
A second-place finish by the Varsity Eight in the regatta's final race bumped the Duke point total up to 82, just one shy of No. 15 Syracuse's winning tally of 83. The Orange netted four wins on Saturday, including victories in their V8, 2V8 and V4 heats, to claim the Pocock Cup for the first time in the event's three-year history.
Duke was trailed in the team standings by No. 9 Penn (80 points), while a pair of ACC teams in Louisville (68) and Clemson (60) rounded out the top five.
"This was another good racing weekend for Duke," said head coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno. "There were lots of great competitors and exciting races in what could be one of the best venues in the country. Syracuse and Penn showed tremendous speed, and our crews learned a lot racing next to their boats. We have some work to do to hit our goals, but the team is excited to keep pushing."
After placing first in both of its races on Friday, the Duke 3V8 opened Saturday by completing the clean sweep, finishing nearly nine seconds ahead of Navy with a time of 7:04.021. The 2V4 followed with its own first-place mark of 7:41.175, outracing the Mids by over six seconds.
The V4 and 2V8 each fell short to Penn by close margins, beginning with the V4 crossing the finish line 5.7 seconds behind. The 2V8 held pace with the Quakers down the first 1,500 meters of the course before a late sprint by Penn gained a 3.36-second difference.
The Blue Devils will have three weeks of preparation before heading to Clemson, S.C., for the ACC Championship May 13-14. Duke claimed a silver medal at last season's conference regatta.
