DURHAM – Senior
Maddie Jenner's goal with 1:21 remaining pushed seventh-ranked Duke past second-ranked Boston College, 16-15, in thrilling women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon in Koskinen Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils won their ninth game in a row, improve to 15-1, 6-1 ACC and hand the Eagles just their second loss of the season (13-2, 5-2 ACC). Duke's record is tied with its best start since 2006, when the Blue Devils were ACC regular season champions and reached the NCAA semifinal game.
"We knew today was going to be a battle," head coach
Kerstin Kimel said. "Obviously Boston College is a great team who scores a ton of goals. The draw [control] was a huge focus and we had to be efficient on offense, and looking at the stats, I believe we did that. This game validates what we've always thought, which is we're a top team."
The Blue Devils were led by two with hat tricks as graduate student
Abby Landry recorded her 100th career point with three goals. Saturday marked Landry's third straight game with a hat trick while
Catriona Barry,
Anna Callahan,
Eva Greco and Jenner all added three points in the victory.
The Blue Devils' defensive unit was tough as nails the entire game and had one of the most powerful offenses in the country scrambling. Redshirt junior
Maddie Johnston paced the defense with a career-high five ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.
Senior goalkeeper
Sophia LeRose got the start between the pipes and finished the contest with eight saves while rookie
Kennedy Everson saw quality minutes and collected a huge save from a Charlotte North free-position attempt at 5:52 in the fourth.
Duke was first on the board with two goals in under two-and-a-half minutes as Greco and sophomore
Katie Keller tallied their first scores at 12:36. The Eagles responded with two, but Duke was all gas with four of the next five to close the opening 15. Barry led the way with a goal and a dime during the seven-minute stretch that gave Duke a 6-3 edge.
LeRose was crucial in the opening quarter with four saves on seven Boston College shots.
Callahan fired two absolute rockets to the top of the net in the second stanza as the Blue Devils took an 11-7 lead heading into the break.
Duke extended its lead (13-7) following intermission as Jenner and sophomore
Katie DeSimone quickly found the back of the net 90 seconds into the third. Boston College tallied three unanswered (13-10) before Barry scampered to the goal just before the shot clock sounded for her second of the day.
Leading 14-10 at the start of the fourth, Boston College outscored Duke 5-2, but its defense held tough like it had all game. Boston College's Kayla Martello tacked on her fourth goal of the day and tied up the contest, 15-15, with 2:40 remaining in the game. Jenner won a critical draw control and executed on the offensive end, proving she's more than just the draw control queen.
Caroline DeBellis set up a high pass just outside the crease and Jenner finished for her second goal, giving Duke a one-goal lead (16-15).
With just under 90 ticks left, the Eagles won the draw and got a good look at the back of the net, but graduate student
Katie Cosgrove shut it down by forcing a turnover and giving Duke the win.
Winning the draw is always important, especially in close games, and Jenner proved she is the best in the country today with 12 while North tallied one.
Duke finished the day 9-of-12 on clears and 3-of-3 on free-position attempts.
Duke's offense locked in on Boston College's leading scorer Charlotte North, who is ranked fourth nationally, and kept her scoreless the entire first half. She finished with two goals. The Eagles were led by Belle Smith with nine points from three goals and six assists.
Duke will close out the regular season Thursday at No. 1 North Carolina. Opening draw is set for 8 p.m., on ESPNU.
