CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 5 Duke dropped an 18-4 decision to top-ranked North Carolina on Thursday evening in ACC women's lacrosse action at Dorrance Field.
The Tar Heels (15-0, 8-0 ACC) handed the Blue Devils just their second loss of the season, shifting their record to 15-2 (6-2 ACC).
North Carolina's defense stymied Duke's high-scoring offense Thursday evening allowing just four goals from
Catriona Barry,
Katie DeSimone,
Veronica Hineman and
Katie Keller. Senior attack
Eva Greco tallied Duke's lone dime.
The Tar Heels were led by Scottie Rose Growney's five goals as well as four goals each by Jamie Ortega and Ally Mastroianni. Goalkeeper Taylor Moreno made eight saves in goal for a .667 save percentage.
The home side tallied the first two scores of the contest before the Blue Devils notched consecutive goals in under 40 seconds to tie the game up at 2-2. The one-two punch arrived as Barry and Keller both connected on frame with 10:55 and 10:16 remaining, respectively, in the opening quarter. Both offenses struggled with a 10-minute scoring drought before Growney scored her second tally off a free position with 48 seconds remaining in the frame.
Duke's offensive struggles continued throughout the next three quarters as the Blue Devils were held scoreless for a little under 42 minutes. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels broke the game open with 15 unanswered goals to create an 18-3 gap between the team with 3:38 remaining in the contest. Hineman ended the drought as Greco found her charging toward goal. Despite one final tally from DeSimone with 25 seconds remaining, the deficit proved to be too much for the Blue Devils.
Duke was outshot 31-18 and it registered 15 turnovers to just five for North Carolina.
Freshman
Kennedy Everson got the start in goal for Duke and picked up three saves.
Katie Cosgrove tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers on the defensive end, while
Maddie Jenner had 11 draw controls.
Duke turns its attention to the postseason, starting with the ACC Championship which is set to run April 27 - May 7 in South Bend, Ind.
