DURHAM – Duke swimming & diving celebrated the 2021-22 season and hosted its end of year banquet Tuesday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
While celebrating the success of the 2021-22 season, Duke gave out four team awards. The awards given were the Most Valuable Athlete, Most Outstanding Performance, Blue Devil Award and the newly dubbed Matt McKenna Above and Beyond Award.
"I want to thank all our seniors who have meant so much to so many people on this team," head coach
Dan Colella said. "They've given everything they had for the last four years to help this program be in a better place than when they arrived. I know they're going to do magnificent things in the future, I'm looking forward to seeing what those things are and we know that they'll always be a part of the DSDT family."
"To our award recipients, congratulations. They're all incredibly well deserved. One new special award is the Matt McKenna above and beyond Award. This award honors the passing of Matt McKenna this past spring, a very hard time. Matt was a young man who started out as a team manager, became a member of the team as a varsity swimmer and did so many things during his lifetime for people always with the idea of advancing people and kindness."
Duke enjoyed a plethora of success in its 2021-22 season. The Blue Devils recorded 10 program records, 37 top-five times and 78 top-10 times in program history. Duke also saw two ACC Championships and five All-ACC honors, the most in a single season since 2014, while the women placed fifth in the meet to match its best finish in school lore.
Diver
Margo O'Meara was named the women's team's Most Valuable Athlete. O'Meara was stellar in her rookie campaign. The St. Louis, Mo., native was named the ACC Diver of the Meet at the ACC Championship, winning the one-meter and platform events. At the NCAA Championship, O'Meara was a two-time All-American, earning first-team honors in one-meter diving and honorable mention in three-meter diving. O'Meara was a four-time ACC Diver of the Week and placed scores in the top three in program history in each of the three collegiate diving events.
Sophomore
Seamus Harding Jr., was tabbed the Most Valuable Athlete for the men's team. Harding Jr., enjoyed his sophomore season, earning his first career All-ACC honor at the ACC Championship. His mark of 376.30, the third-highest score in program history, placed second in the platform diving event at the ACC Championship. Harding Jr., narrowly missed NCAA qualification, placing eighth in platform diving at the Zone B Diving Championship.
The Blue Devil Award is given to those who exemplify the true character of a Duke student-athlete. They are committed to their team's betterment in academics, athletics, community work, motivation, encouragement, dedication and attitude. This year, the Blue Devil Award was given to seniors
Lucy Callard and
John Day for their consistent commitment to the program.
The Matt McKenna Above and Beyond Award was recently named to honor late Duke swimming and diving alumnus Matt McKenna. The recipients for the inaugural year were juniors
Catherine Belyakov and
Coleman Kredich. The pair was awarded for having gone above and beyond the expectations of the program in dedication, work ethic, commitment and performance.
Belyakov had her best year to date while at Duke, recording five times that placed in the top-10 times in program history this season. Kredich made his return to the water after being sidelined by injury in 2020-21. He swam two individual top-10 times in school lore and two school record relays.
Four Blue Devils were recognized for the Most Outstanding Performances. The award is given to one male and female swimmer and diver referencing an outstanding performance throughout the season.
Junior
Sarah Foley and the men's 400 freestyle relay team were tabbed the swimming Most Outstanding Performances. Foley, who set five program records in the 2021-22 season, earned the honor after her stellar week at the ACC Championship. Foley swam two career-best times that broke school records in the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley. She earned a pair of All-ACC honors in the 200 freestyle (second) and 200 individual medley (second), while placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke.

Zach McIntyre earned the honor after breaking two program records at the ACC Championship. The foursome swam the fastest time in program history in the 200 freestyle relay (1:17.86) and the 400 freestyle relay (2:52.71).
O'Meara and Harding Jr. earned the diving Most Outstanding Performances for their ACC meets.
