NEW ORLEANS – Duke men's basketball junior
Michael Savarino was today presented with the Elite 90 Award, recognizing the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.
The Elite 90 Academic Recognition Award Program was instituted by the NCAA to recognize the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.
A sociology major in his third academic year at Duke, Savarino maintains a 3.828 GPA. The Durham, N.C., native was presented the award by NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee Vice Chair Chris Reynolds following the Blue Devils' open practice at the Caesars Superdome.
Duke takes on North Carolina in the national semifinal on Saturday at 8:49 p.m. ET on TBS.
