Last Time Out
Duke kicked off ACC play in style, sweeping Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga., in a three-game set from Mar. 4-6.
Jameson Kavel had another huge stint in her native Georgia, hitting .556 with two home runs and three RBI, tying a career-high with four hits in the opener (also set at Georgia Tech in 2019). In the circle,
Peyton St. George was the winning pitcher in each game, going 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA (14.1 IP) and striking out 16. The series sweep was the third consecutive ACC sweep dating back to last season and the Blue Devils have now won 18 straight games against ACC opponents.
Opponent History
Duke vs. Penn State – Duke leads 3-1
The Blue Devils have hosted the Nittany Lions on four occasions but will welcome a new head coach to Duke Softball Stadium in Clarisa Crowell, who is in her second season with the team and has never faced the Blue Devils at Penn State. In the last meeting between the two teams,
Shelby Walters pitched a gem, striking out six batters over seven complete innings, while
Kristina Foreman hit a two-run home run in the win.
Duke vs. Charlotte – Duke leads 2-1
The two programs have had several close battles, with the last meeting going the way of the Blue Devils on Mar. 3, 2021, in a 5-3, extra-inning win.
Rachel Crabtree was the hero of the last game, with a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning. In all three meetings, no team has scored more than five runs and each game has been decided by two runs or less. Both games hosted by Charlotte went to extra innings, while the Blue Devils took the lone meeting in Durham in 2019.
Scouting The Opponents
Penn State: At 9-9 overall, the Nittany Lions are seeing dramatic improvement after seven wins all last season. Penn State is in the middle of a lengthy swing in North Carolina, where they cruised past the Tar Heels, 12-0 on March. 4 to headline the trip. Penn State and Duke have both met Georgia Tech this season, with the Nittany Lions dropping both games to the Yellow Jackets. Catcher Ally Kurland is a big bat for the offense, hitting .344 with six home runs and 16 RBI and Bailey Parshall is the team's ace, at 5-2 with a 1.87 ER (63.2 IP).
Charlotte: Off to an electric start, the 49ers are making waves in the non-conference portion of their schedule, going 18-3 and earning the No. 25 ranking in the NFCA's latest poll. Charlotte picked up a signature win for the program, beating then No. 6 Virginia Tech, 5-2, on Mar. 6, for the highest ranked win in program history. In the team's three losses, big offenses have plagued them, with a 16-1 loss to Notre Dame as the headliner on Feb. 13. Senior Bailey Vannoy is off to very fast start, hitting .467 with seven home runs and 18 RBI. In the circle, the staff is allowing a lot of hits, but not many runs, with hitters averaging .324 off Charlotte pitching, but only 68 runs in 142 innings. Lindsey Walljasper is one of the leading arms, at 7-1 with a 2.42 ERA (52.0 IP) this season.
What to Watch For
- Caroline Jacobsen is in the longest on-base streak of her career, reaching in all 19 games this season. The longest streak in program history is Crabtree's 25 games in 2019.

- Foreman holds the Duke single season home run record at 12, but already has eight in 19 games this season.

- Gisele Tapia is just two games away from playing in her 100th game as a Blue Devil.
- Duke is swinging for the fences early this season, ranking second in the nation in home runs per game at 2.05, behind only No. 1 Oklahoma. Foreman leads the team with eight on the season, good for ninth in the NCAA.
- In addition to leading the ACC in home runs per game, the Blue Devils also lead the league in batting average (.348), slugging percentage (.652), on-base percentage (.445) and scoring (7.68 runs per game).
