PALM CITY, Fla. – Sophomore
Ian Siebers is 8-under par through 36 holes, including a career-low 64 in the second round, to pace the Duke men's golf team at the Valspar Collegiate that began Monday at The Floridian in Palm City, Fla.
The Blue Devils are 7-under as a team with 18 holes to play on Tuesday and finds themselves tied for fifth with Wake Forest and Ohio State. Pepperdine holds the 36-hole lead at 28-under, followed by Arizona (-14), North Carolina (-12), Florida State (-9), Duke, Ohio State and Wake to round out the top five.
Siebers followed up his opening-round 1-under 70 with a sizzling 64 in Monday's second round that was punctuated by a string on five birdies in a six-hole stretch, including four consecutive near the turn. The sophomore from Bellevue, Wash., whose previous career-low round was a 65 earlier this season, is tied for third and five off the pace set by Pepperdine's Dylan Menante at 13-under.
Also for the Blue Devils, freshman
Kelly Chinn is 4-under through 36 holes and tied for 15th, thanks to rounds of 70 and 68. Sophomore
Jimmy Zheng is two strokes back of Chinn at 2-under 140 (68-72), while freshman
John Peters is tied for 65th at 7-over 149 (77-72) and senior
Quinn Riley is tied for 73rd at 10-over 152 (79-73).
Tuesday's final round at the Valspar is underway with a shotgun at start at 8:30 a.m. The Blue Devils are pair with Texas Tech and Houston for the final round with groups teeing off the 8th, 9th and 10th holes.
Duke also had two players playing individually at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational, which wrapped up Monday. Graduate student
Qi wen Wong tied for 71st at 20-over (79-76-81), while sophomore
Daniel Uranga was 77th at 27-over (80-81-82).
