SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Duke put together a valiant second-half comeback but couldn't overcome a first-half deficit as Syracuse came away with a 14-10 victory in ACC men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
The 10th-ranked Blue Devils fall to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in ACC play, while Syracuse improves to 4-4 and 1-1 against ACC foes.
Duke sophomore
Brennan O'Neill recorded three goals to become the 49th Blue Devil to reach 100 career points. He reached the century mark in 29 games, tying Zack Greer as the third fastest Blue Devil to the benchmark. The hat trick was the 16th of his career.
Syracuse jumped out to a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes and extended it to 7-1 midway through second quarter. The Blue Devils scored three of the four goals of the quarter, including one from rookie
Andrew McAdorey with four seconds left to head into the locker room down 8-4.
Balanced scoring was the story for the Orange in the first half as it got goals from seven different players. Tucker Dordevic paced Syracuse overall on the day with five goals and two assists for seven points. Syracuse outshot Duke, 31-18, in the first half.
The Blue Devils stormed back in the second half, cutting the lead to a single goal twice, but couldn't complete the comeback.
Junior
Dyson Williams started the action in the third quarter with his 31st goal of the year on a nice feed from
Nakeie Montgomery. After Syracuse answered to keep a four-goal advantage, Duke responded with three of the next four to pull within one, 10-9. Montgomery finished his day with two assists.
Graduate student
Sean Lulley got his second of the afternoon at the 9:12 mark and McAdorey notched No. 2 two minutes later. O'Neill finished the quarter with two more to send the Blue Devils into the fourth quarter trailing by just one.
The Blue Devils and Orange traded goals early in the fourth as Syracuse went back up two on a tally from Dordevic. Duke answered just over a minute later with a marker from
Joe Robertson – his 197th career point.
After being outscored 6-3 over the course of the previous 18 minutes, the Orange found its rhythm again on offense and scored three goals in 3:35 to pull away down the stretch for the 14-10 victory.
Mike Adler finished the day with 10 saves and a pair of ground balls.
Jake Naso went 12-of-28 at the faceoff dot and picked up four ground balls. Junior defenseman
Kenny Brower had two caused turnovers and four ground balls to lead the way for the Blue Devils.
Syracuse backstop
Bobby Gavin had 10 saves in 60 minutes as the Orange outshot Duke 61-33 for the game.
Duke closes out its road swing at North Carolina next Saturday, April 2. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m., at Dorrance Field on ACC Network.
