DURHAM – Senior outfielder
RJ Schreck has been named one of the 30 candidates for the 2022 Senior CLASS Award for baseball, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.Â
Â
Schreck, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., has been a staple in the Duke outfield and earned third-team All-ACC and second-team ABCA All-Atlantic team honors as a junior in 2021. He ranked in the top-10 in the conference in batting average (.337), home runs (18), RBIs (52), slugging percentage (.635) and hits (70).
Â
He entered the 2022 season named to the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award watch list and a preseason third team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. After missing the first week and a half of the 2022 season, Schreck has picked up right where he left off, hitting .340 to lead the team and holding a team-leading five home runs.
Â
Off the field, Schreck is a computer science major and is working towards minors in economics and cultural anthropology. He was named to the 2021 ACC All-Academic Baseball Team.
Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior or graduate student and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
Â
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches, and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character, and competition.
Â
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2022 College World Series® in June.
