HIGH POINT, N.C. – Four top-five program marks and a first-place finish at the Bob Davidson Invitational headlined a solid day of competition at the first meet of the outdoor season for the Duke track and field program.
Graduate student
Erick Duffy picked up right where he left off at the end of the indoor season and kicked off his outdoor season with a win in the men's pole vault. Duffy cleared a height of 5.30m (17-4.50 feet) to finish first among the 11-member field, vaulting into No. 2 all-time in program history. Classmate
Michael Fairbanks also carried over his success from the indoor season as he took third in the event behind a height of 5.05m (16-6.75 feet).
Moorea Mitchell commenced Friday's action with the women's hammer throw and opened her spring campaign with a bang. On her final throw, the sophomore registered a new personal best and improved her No. 4 all-time program mark with a toss of 54.20m (177-10 feet) – good for second among the field.

Chris Shanahan finished in the top five of the men's javelin with each registering personal bests in the process. Jackson was runner-up and moved into fourth all-time at Duke on a throw of 70.14m (230-1 feet), while Campbell took fourth via his mark of 68.79m (225-8 feet), which ranks fifth in program lore. Shanahan earned fifth place with a throw of 65.85m (216 feet).
Sophomore
Jamila Otieno closed out the evening on a high note for the Blue Devils. Otieno made her collegiate javelin debut and placed third overall via a 39.22m (128-8 feet) toss.
