DURHAM – No. 13 Duke softball (22-3, 7-0 ACC) extended its win streak to 11 straight games, defeating No. 17 Clemson, 6-2, on Friday night at Duke Softball Stadium.
Peyton St. George delivered a complete game in the circle against the Tigers (18-7, 0-4 ACC), allowing one earned run and striking out eight batters over seven innings. The Blue Devils used five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away from the Tigers for the victory.
The Tigers were the first on the board in the first inning, as McKenzie Clark led off the inning with a double and came home on a passed ball. However,
Caroline Jacobsen tied the game in the second inning with a solo home run down the left field line.
St. George continued to keep the Tigers bats at bay for several scoreless frames, striking out four of six batters in the third and fourth innings. Her offense picked her up quickly thereafter, finally getting to Clemson starter Valerie Cagle in the fifth inning.
Kamryn Jackson opened the top of the fifth inning with a double, kicking off a big inning for the Blue Devils.
Kyla Morris gave Duke a 2-1 lead with an RBI single and
Jameson Kavel would drive in another run with an RBI single up the middle to take a 3-1 lead.
Rachel Crabtree helped put the game out of reach, taking a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for a three-run home run and 6-2 advantage.
Clemson was able to respond with a run on the first at-bat of the sixth inning, as Clark tallied a solo home run. However, St. George settled down to secure the win, improving to 12-1 on the season by limiting the Tigers to just one more hit the rest of the game.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting the Tigers for the second of three games at Duke Softball Stadium. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
Notes:
- St. George tallied her fifth consecutive complete game in the win. That is the longest streak of her collegiate career.
- The Blue Devils improved to 4-3 against ranked opponents this season.
- The Blue Devils also won their 22nd consecutive game against an ACC opponent, dating back to last season.
- Kavel extends her on-base streak to nine straight games. Her longest streak of the season was 11 games.
