DURHAM – No. 13 Duke softball (22-4, 7-1 ACC) saw its 11-game win streak come to an end, dropping a 10-2 decision to No. 17 Clemson on Saturday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium.
Rachel Crabtree launched a solo home run and
Ana Gold added an RBI to pace the Blue Devils offense. Starting pitcher
Jala Wright struck out four Clemson (19-7, 1-4 ACC) batters over three innings in the circle.
Wright and Clemson starter Mille Thompson traded scoreless frames for the first three innings, with Wright striking out three straight Tigers in the first inning after the opening two batters reached.
However, the Tigers were able to score eight runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two Blue Devil errors and hit-by-pitches.
Crabtree was able to get the Blue Devils on the board in the bottom of the frame, tallying her seventh long ball of the season on a blast to left field to make it 8-1.
After the Tigers added two more runs in the top of the fifth, the Blue Devils responded in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Jameson Kavel delivered a single with two outs, setting up Gold. The freshman from Ballston Spa, N.Y., laced her second double of the day to the left field wall to score Kavel and make it 10-2.
The Blue Devils will be back in action for the rubber game of the series, hosting the Tigers at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
Notes:
- Kavel extends her on-base streak to 10 straight games. Her longest streak of the season was 11 games.
- Crabtree hit a home run for the second consecutive game. Crabtree accomplished this feat for the first time in her collegiate career.
- Crabtree also extends her season-long hit streak to six consecutive games.
