DURHAM – The seventh-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team secured its sixth victory of the season with a 19-9 win over East Carolina Monday at Koskinen Stadium.
With the dub, head coach
Kerstin Kimel's squad improves to 6-0 this spring, its best start since 2015 when Duke finished the season 16-5 (5-2 ACC) and went to the NCAA semifinals. Duke is averaging 21.83 goals per game to rank first nationally.
Duke's offense was led once again by graduate student
Catriona Barry with five points off of four goals and an assist. She has tallied at least five points in every game this season and now owns 40 points this season.
Sophomore
Katie DeSimone and senior
Eva Greco each tallied three points (2 goals, 1 assist) as 13 different Blue Devils registered a point this afternoon.
The Pirates were first on the board two-and-a-half minutes into the contest, the first time this season Duke's opponent has scored first. After that, Duke equalized with a free-position shot from DeSimone at 11:47 in the first. Duke quickly found its rhythm after that and outscored the Pirates, 6-2, to end the quarter with a 6-3 advantage.
It was all Duke in the second quarter as six different Blue Devils found the back of the cage. Duke took a 12-3 lead heading into the half to keep the Pirates scoreless. Senior
Anna Callahan picked up a ground ball off a Pirate turnover at midfield, sprinted down the field and found junior
Caroline DeBellis cutting in front of the cage for the last goal of the half.
After the half, Duke pushed its lead to 12 (15-3) as Barry tallied her 30th goal of the season at 8:10 in the third. Greco also tallied her fourth goal this year before the Pirates notched their first goal in nearly 25 minutes.
Caroline Kimel,
Kerstin Kimel's daughter, found the back of the cage for East Carolina's fourth goal (15-4) at 6:05 left in the third. Junior
Olivia Carner tacked on one more goal for Duke with just over four minutes left to make it 16-4.
ECU registered five goals in the fourth quarter as Leah Bestany recorded four, including three off of free-position shots. Freshman
Kerry Nease notched her first career goal as a Blue Devil at 8:29 in the fourth before
Ainsley Thurston tallied Duke's final goal (19-9) of the afternoon from Greco with 13 seconds remaining.
Duke commanded the draw circle with 22 as senior
Maddie Jenner tallied 14 draw controls while
Katie Keller picked up three ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead the team.
Senior
Sophia LeRose got her sixth start this season and picked up the win. Rookie
Kennedy Everson and graduate student
Chase Henriquez also saw time between the pipes for Duke.
The Pirates were led by Bestany with four goals. Goalkeepers Brynn Knight and Sophie Bandorick each recorded six saves.
Duke opens its conference slate Sunday, March 6 against No. 3 Syracuse. Opening draw is set for noon at the Carrier Dome.
