LEVITTOWN, N.Y. – Jack Schultz scored with 25 seconds left in overtime to lift 11th-ranked Penn to a 14-13 victory over the seventh-ranked Blue Devils in non-conference men's lacrosse action this afternoon at MacArthur High School.
The Blue Devils fall to 5-2 overall on the year, while Penn moves to 1-1 with the win. Graduate student
Nakeie Montgomery led the way for Duke with four goals and two assists.
Andrew McAdorey and
Brennan O'Neill both scored twice in their first return trip to Long Island.
Dylan Gergar scored six goals to pace Penn's offense. The attackman had four in the first half before Duke held him to only two in the second half. That pair markers sparked the Quakers' fourth-quarter spurt.
Duke and Penn traded runs throughout the game as the Blue Devils led by as many as three only to have the Quakers fight back to tie the game. Penn scored four of the next five goals to rally back from a 12-9 deficit with 10 minutes to play.
After a save by Duke goaltender
Mike Adler kept the Blue Devil lead at 13-12 with 30 second ticks left on the clock. Gergar missed high over the goal, but James Shipley threw in the tying score with 1.9 seconds left on the clock to force overtime.
Sophomore
Jake Naso won the faceoff in overtime and Duke killed off the final 58 seconds of the penalty. Back to an even six-on-six, Montgomery got an open look, but was denied by Penn goaltender Patrick Burkinshaw.
Burkinshaw finished the game with 11 saves and a pair of caused turnovers and ground balls. Naso was 17-of-29 at the faceoff dot and picked up 10 ground balls.
The Quakers cleared but high pressure from
Wilson Stephenson forced a Penn turnover and gave Duke the ball back with just under two minutes remaining.
The Blue Devils called a timeout and were able to get off a pair of shots, but ultimately ran out of time on the 80-second possession clock, giving Penn the ball with 50 ticks left in overtime.
The Quakers cleared into the offensive end and Schultz saw an opening on the left side and beat his defender to crease and dropped a shot past Adler.
Adler had 10 saves on the afternoon, including four in the fourth quarter to help Duke build the three-goal lead.
The game, overall, was a back-and-forth affair with teams always having an answer for one another. Duke scored the first two goals of the game before the
Quakers responded with four of the next five for a 4-3 advantage late in the first quarter.
Montgomery tied the score after 15 minutes with the first of his four on the afternoon. Penn went ahead again to start the second quarter, but a three-goal run from the Blue Devils put Duke back in front 7-5.
Duke's lead stayed put at one or two until back-to-back goals by O'Neill gave the Blue Devils their largest lead of the game at 10-7.
Just like it had done all game, Penn found a way back within one before Duke responded with crucial goals to maintain its advantage.
Charlie O'Connor scored with 10:32 remaining to give Duke the 12-9 lead, but the Penn defense put the clamps on the Blue Devils down the stretch to set up the thrilling finish.
Duke returns to action March 1 at High Point. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m., at Vert Stadium.
