DURHAM – Off another powerful offensive performance, the eighth-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team secured a 20-4 victory over Wofford Thursday afternoon in Koskinen Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 5-0, their best start since 2015 when Duke finished the season 16-5 (5-2 ACC) and went to the NCAA semifinals.
As its proven all season, Duke scored fast and furiously as the nation's leader in scoring offense. Head coach
Kerstin Kimel's squad received scoring contributions from 12 different Blue Devils. Duke has scored 20 or more goals in all five games this spring.
Offensively, Duke was led by graduate student
Catriona Barry with six points off of five goals and one assist while senior
Maddie Jenner added three goals.
Katie DeSimone,
Olivia Carner,
Abby Landry and
Caroline DeBellis each added two goals, while
Anna Callahan,
Carly Bernstein,
Ainsley Thurston and
Lexi Schmalz rounded out the goal scoring with one apiece. Bernstein finished the outing with her first career goal and assist.
Through five games, Duke has assisted on nearly half of all of its goals with 57 dimes on 112 goals. This afternoon was no exception with 10 assists on 20 goals, led by
Eva Greco and Carner with two each. The duo leads the squad with 10 assists this season.
Duke jumped out to an impressive 15-0 lead at halftime as six different Blue Devils tallied goals.
Jenner registered her first goal of the afternoon from Greco at 13:17 before Duke went on a scoring spurt to tack on three more in less than three minutes. Barry tallied all six of her points in the first 30 minutes of action that included three in the first quarter.
Barry, DeSimone, Jenner and DeBellis increased Duke's lead in the second quarter. DeSimone found Barry for her fifth goal at 9:40 before Barry teamed up with DeBellis at 4:41. Barry found the back of the net at 1:09 left before intermission for her final score of the day.
At the half, Duke outshot Wofford 27-4 as it dominated possession which began with the draw. Jenner finished the afternoon with 10 draw controls as the Blue Devils collected 19 to Wofford's seven. Wofford was just 1-of-5 on clears in the first frame while Duke tallied a near perfect 5-of-6.
After the half, Duke notched two more goals that were spearheaded by Callahan. She opened with a solo shot on goal before finding Thurston in front of the cage (17-0) with 9:03 left in the third. At 7:02, the Terriers recorded their first goal of the contest as Ally Furnari found Elisabeth Ralph (17-1).
The Blue Devils found their final three goals of the afternoon with 13:40 left in the fourth quarter. Schmalz connected on Duke's third free-position attempt at 2:57 in the third before DeBellis connected on Bernstein's pass with one second left before the fourth quarter. Bernstein opened the fourth with a goal off a nice feed from
Olivia Navaroli at 13:40, Duke's final goal of the game to make it a 20-1 score. Wofford tallied three goals to end the contest, 20-4.
Duke tallied 19 ground balls, led by senior
Katie Cosgrove with a career-high four. She also added two caused turnovers to help lead a tough Duke defense.
Senior
Sophia LeRose earned her fifth start this spring in goal and tallied two saves on three shots in 30 minutes of action.
Kennedy Everson,
Chase Henriquez and
Shaye Fitzpatrick also shared time between the pipes.
The Terriers were led by Carley Irvin with two goals. Goalkeeper Aislinn Washburn tallied eight saves in goal.
Duke returns to Koskinen Stadium Monday, Feb. 28 for its final non-conference game before ACC play starts. The Blue Devils will take on East Carolina at 5 p.m., on ACCNX.
