MELBOURNE, Fla. ā The Duke women's golf team wrapped up the Moon Golf Invitational on Tuesday with an even-par round of 288, as freshman
Rylie Heflin and sophomore
Phoebe Brinker shot 1-under in the final round at the 6,417-yard, par-72 Classic Course at Suntree Country Club.
Heflin posted her second under-par ledger of her short career with a 71, while Brinker totaled her second under-par score of the season. Ā
As a team, Duke placed tied for 10th with an 882, but shot only 4-over-par over the final 36 holes after a slow start.Ā Florida State took home the team title with an 854, while Virginia (860), LSU (861), Alabama (862) and UCF (863) rounded out the top five teams.Ā Ingrid Lindblad of LSU captured the individual title with a 10-under, 206. Ā
"I took some important positives away from this tournament," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks.Ā "I didn't see any pressing going on the last two days despite poor scoring the first day. Anne's 67 is an example of that.Ā In fact our composure was very impressive all three days.Ā Except for lost shots due to wintertime rustiness, I'd put our last two days up against anyone."
For the second straight day, junior
Erica Shepherd collected a birdie on the par-5 No. 10, but then suffered bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes, after missing the fairway off the tee.Ā Shepherd, who hails from Greenwood, Ind., finished strong with a 1-under-par ledger over her final 14 holes.Ā She collected 12 consecutive pars, before rolling in a 15-footer for birdie on No. 17 to get back to even for the day.Ā She finished with an even-par, 72, marking her 20th career round of even or under par and the team-best seventh this season.Ā Shepherd hit 14 greens, 10 fairways and had 32 putts on the day. She placed tied for 23rd overall with a 54-hole score of 219. Ā
"It felt good to get back in competitive mode after a long break," said Shepherd.Ā "We definitely started off slow, but our team score improved each day which shows what we're capable of and that we're trending in the right direction. For me, I felt like I struck the ball really well, which was really important with how windy it was. I have some things to clean up short game wise for next week and I'm excited to get to work on that."
Sophomore
Anne Chen closed the tournament with a 2-over, 74, after tying for a team-best with four birdies on Tuesday.Ā A product of Sugar Land, Texas, Chen opened her day with back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and No. 11.Ā She suffered three bogeys over a span of four holes, before closing the back nine with a birdie on the 460-yard, par-5 No. 18 as she hit her sand wedge from 85 yards to eight feet.Ā Chen made the turn at even-par and held onto her even score until she bogied her final two holes to conclude play.Ā She hit 11 fairways, 11 greens and rolled 31 putts.Ā Chen finished tied for 26th with a 4-over, 220. Ā
With four birdies on the day, Brinker tied Chen for the team lead.Ā Brinker, who is from Wilmington, Del., opened her day with a 3-over, 39, front nine, but registered birdies on No. 1, No. 2 and No. 8 as she played her final nine holes at 2-under.Ā She hit her approach shots on the first and second holes to one and two feet, respectively, as she had her irons dialed in.Ā Brinker then rolled in an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 8 to finish with a 1-under, 71.Ā She hit a team-best 15 greens on Tuesday and notched her first under par round of the season.Ā For the tournament, she tied for 26th with a three-day score of 220. Ā
Heflin featured one of the strongest finishes on the day as she was 3-under-par over her final 14 holes to conclude with a 71.Ā After suffering bogeys on her first and fourth holes, Heflin was solid the rest of the way with birdies on No. 18, No. 4 and No. 8.Ā She started it off by hitting her 54-degree wedge from 90 yards on No. 18 to four feet for birdie.Ā Heflin, who is from Avondale, Pa., then hit her gap wedge from 99 yards to six feet on No. 4 and with the wind in her face, hit a 9-iron from 124 yards to 12 feet for birdie on No. 8.Ā She hit 12 greens, rolled 29 putts on the day and carded a 71.
Junior
Megan Furtney held a 1-over ledger through her opening 11 holes, which included a birdie on No. 18.Ā On five of the final seven holes, Furtney was only 1-over as well, but she struggled on No. 5 and No. 6 as she was 5-over on those two and finished with a 79.Ā A native of St. Charles, Ill, Furtney added collected another birdie on the 380-yard, par-4 No. 8 as she hit her 56-degree wedge to two feet and sank the putt.Ā She notched 28 putts on the day, which tied a career low. Ā
Duke will have a quick turnaround as the Blue Devils will travel to Hilton Head, S.C., for the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Feb. 28 to March 2 at the Long Cove Club.Ā The action will be aired live on Golf Channel. Ā
