HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Duke women's golf team opened action at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Monday and featured a solid start. However , the Blue Devils struggled on the back nine on its way to finishing with a 17-over, 301, at the 6,281-yard, Par-71 Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
All 17 teams dealt with high winds and challenging conditions, as each squad shot over par in round one. Duke was in second place heading into the back nine with a 4-over-par ledger, but the Blue Devils struggled on holes No. 11-14 with a 10-over score to fall down the leaderboard.
Baylor jumped out to the lead with a 287, while Texas (289), Alabama (290), Wake Forest (291) and LSU (291) were in the top five.
Sophomore
Phoebe Brinker led the Duke charge on Monday with a 2-over, 73. She featured the best start of the day for the Blue Devils with a bogey on No. 1, before rolling in a six-footer for birdie on No. 2 and then sank a 12-foot uphill put for her second straight birdie. Brinker, a native of Wilmington, Del., parred the next seven holes to stay at 1-under, but then suffered a double-bogey on No. 11. She added six pars and one bogey to finish her round. Brinker hit 14 greens, 10 fairways and had 33 putts on the day.
After registering four pars to kick off her day, junior
Erica Shepherd stuck her approach on the 314-yard, par-4 fifth hole to two feet and rolled in the birdie. She missed the fairway on the next hole and suffered a double-bogey and followed that with a bogey to drop to 2-over. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., parred four out of the next five holes with a bogey on No. 11. She closed the afternoon even over the final seven holes as she drained a 30-footer for birdie on No. 13 and had a bogey on No. 14, as she finished with a 74. Shepherd hit 11 fairways, 11 greens and had 31 putts.
Both
Anne Chen and
Rylie Heflin signed for a 77 in round one.
Chen, a product of Sugar Land, Texas, suffered a double-bogey on the opening hole, but then was even par over the next 10 holes. She was limited to one birdie on the 158-yard, par-3 eighth hole. Chen closed the day with three pars and four bogeys on the final seven holes. She couldn't get her putter working on Monday with 35 putts, while hitting 11 greens and 10 greens.
Coming off notching a 1-under, 71, to close the Moon Golf Invitational, Heflin had a solid start to the day with a 1-over, 37, on the front nine. She had six pars, two bogeys and on No. 8 she hit her 8-iron from 145 yards to six feet for birdie. Heflin, who hails from Avondale, Pa., collected seven pars on the back, but was 5-over on holes No. 11 and No. 13. She hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and had 33 putts.
Junior
Megan Furtney was 7-over on 15 of her holes, but had three big numbers on the back that led to shooting a 90 in round one. She rolled 31 putts on the day.
Holes No. 11 and No. 14 played as the two hardest holes on Monday. The Blue Devils were a combined 16-over on those when all was said and done.
Duke will open action in the second round beginning at 10:30 a.m., off hole No. 10 along with South Carolina and Auburn.
