Setting the Scene...
Seeing action in its third game over the last six days, the Duke women's basketball team (13-6, 4-5 ACC) will host 12th-ranked Georgia Tech (17-4, 8-2) on Tuesday, Feb. 1 in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7 p.m.
The game will be carried live on ACC Network Extra with
David Shumate (PXP) and Debbie Taylor (Color) calling the action. It will also be aired on the Blue Devil Sports Network via WDNC AM 620, the Varsity Network app and www.GoDuke.com with Chris Edwards (PXP) on the air at 6:45 p.m.
Food and Beverage Service Suspension Continued...
Duke Athletics has announced that its suspension of food and beverage service at home athletic events is extended through at least Tuesday, Feb. 1.
For basketball home games, no concessions will be available and food and beverage options will continue to be suspended in all hospitality areas. This is consistent with the university's current protocols to reduce the risk of COVID transmission during the current surge of the Omicron variant. Duke Athletics thanks its fans for remaining diligent in adhering to the University's indoor mask mandates and again reminds its patrons to wear proper, tight-fitting masks that cover the nose and mouth when indoors on campus.
What is Next?...
Duke will play its fourth game in eight days on Thursday, Feb. 3 as the Blue Devils travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face Pitt at 6 p.m.
A Look at Georgia Tech...
Georgia Tech enters the contest with a 17-4 overall and 8-2 league mark, while riding a four-game winning streak. On the road, the Yellow Jackets have totaled a 6-2 ledger. Georgia Tech has been led by Nerea Hermosa (11.1 points), Lotta-Maj Lahtinen (10.5 points), Eylia Love (10.2 points) and Lorela Cubaj (10.1 points, 11.7 rebounds).
The Series with Georgia Tech...
Duke and Georgia Tech will face off for the 73rd time in program history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 62-10. The Blue Devil's longest win streak against the Yellow Jackets was 37 games - January 18, 1995 to March 7, 2014. Duke's longest losing streak was three games - March 2, 1992 to February 26, 1993.
In the last meeting, Duke won 58-46 on January 26, 2020, in Durham. The Blue Devils are 30-3 in games played in Cameron.
Taylor Misses Sixth Straight Game...
Celeste Taylor has missed six games since being injured at Syracuse on Jan. 9.
In the six games Taylor has been out, the Blue Devils have seen their offense struggle - hitting 40.9 percent from the field, 30.0 percent from downtown while averaging only 59.3 points. The Duke defense has allowed 66.8 points in those games as well. In the first 13 games with Taylor, Duke hit 44.6 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from downtown and averaged 74.7 points. The Blue Devil defense was allowing only 59.4 points with Taylor as well.
Over the last nine games, Duke has missed at least one student-athlete in each game due to either injury or health and safety protocols.
Milestone Watch...
•
Shayeann Day-Wilson has moved into 10th on Duke's freshman three-pointers made (32) and ninth on the attempted lists (85).
•
Miela Goodchild needs three 3-pointers to move into a tie for ninth on Duke's all-time treys list with 159, which would tie Jennifer Scanlon.
•
Jade Williams owns 107 career blocks and needs 24 rejections to move into a tie for 10th on Duke's all-time charts along with Mistie Bass (131).

• Duke head coach
Kara Lawson missed the last two contests due to health and safety protocols. Assistant coach
Winston Gandy served as the acting head coach for the North Carolina game and
Beth Cunningham for the Louisville contest.

Jade Williams has faced Georgia Tech on three occasions and has totaled double-digit scoring in two of those games. She had a season-high 16 points as a freshman in Cameron as she hit 7-of-8 field goals and then notched 10 points on 5-of-7 field goals as a sophomore in Atlanta, Ga. She has hit 15-of-21 field goals in three games.
• Duke's defense has allowed 46.0 points, 53.6 percent shooting and 42.9 percent from 3-point land over the last two games in the first half. The Blue Devils have been outscored 46.0 to 26.5 in those games. Duke has also turned the ball over 19 times to seven for opponents. The Blue Devils have responded in the second half of those games averaging 37.0 points and allowing 31.5 points of those games.
• Over her playing career at Tennessee,
Kara Lawson helped lead the Lady Vols to 47 wins against top-20 teams, 20 top-10 victories and nine top-5 wins. The Blue Devils are now 2-4 against ranked opponents on the season.

Miela Goodchild is one of only four ACC players that have drained 22 or more 3-pointers in league action this season -- Dara Mabrey (Notre Dame), Jewel Spear (WFU), Georgia Amoore (VT).
• Senior
Onome Akinbode-James has pulled down five or more rebounds in each of the last seven games.

Vanessa de Jesus recently notched a season-high 11 points against Virginia. She hit a career-high 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. Over the last three games, de Jesus has averaged 8.0 points, 1.3 assists, 2.0 rebounds, 0.7 steals and hit 7-of-13 field goals.
• Duke drained 3-of-14 three-pointers against Virginia.
Nyah Green (2-of-2) and
Jiselle Havas (1-of-1) hit the only treys off the bench.

Miela Goodchild scored double-digits against North Carolina to reach 10+ points in a career-best six straight contests. She was limited to seven points at Louisville.
• In both losses to Virginia Tech, the Blue Devils were without key members of the team. In the first game, Duke was without
Shayeann Day-Wilson,
Imani Lewis and
Emma Schmidt. Then, Duke was without
Lexi Gordon and
Celeste Taylor in the second contest.
• Since
Shayeann Day-Wilson missed the Dec. 30 game against Virginia Tech due to health and safety protocols, she has hit only 6-of-25 treys.

Miela Goodchild ranks third in 3-point field goal percentage (43.1), second in 3-point field goals made (2.75) and 18th in rebounding (5.9).
Onome Akinbode-James ranks 15th in rebounding (6.1) and 11th in blocks (1.3).
Shayeann Day-Wilson ranks seventh in assists (3.5), 10th in free throw percentage (75.7) and 19th in scoring (12.3).

Hey, I Know You...
Duke head coach
Kara Lawson will face her former Tennessee assistant coach Mickie DeMoss on Thursday. DeMoss was an assistant coach/associate head coach under Pat Summitt at Tennessee during Lawson's four years with the Lady Vols. At Georgia Tech, DeMoss is the Chief of Staff for head coach Nell Fortner.
Lawson will also go up against her former Tennessee teammate Tasha Butts. The duo played together for three seasons -- 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03. They led the Lady Vols to a 93-13 record in three years, including NCAA Final Four appearances in 2002 and 2003. Tennessee also went 41-1 in SEC play.
Senior
Elizabeth Balogun will face her former team, Georgia Tech, on Thursday. In 2018-19, Balogun was the ACC Freshman of the Year averaging 14.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks.
Lorela Cubaj, Lotta-Maj Lahtinen and Kierra Fletcher are the only players still with the Yellow Jackets who also played with Balogun in 2018-19.

Since ACC action started, the Blue Devils have featured six different starting lineups in nine league games due to injuries and health and safety protocols.
Only
Elizabeth Balogun has started each of the ACC games.
Duke had the same starting lineup for the first 10 games this season. Eight different players have started at least one game this season.

Shayeann Day-Wilson collecting her second game this season with 25+ points, she has joined a list of elite former Blue Devils.
Day-Wilson is just the fifth Blue Devil rookie to notch two games with 25 or more points in a season joining Alana Beard (4), Chris Moreland (3), Jenni Kraft (2) and Tara McCarthy (2).
In looking at the ACC this season, Day-Wilson is the only freshman to collect two games with 25+ points. She is one of five freshmen nationally to notch two 25+ point performances.
