RICHMOND, Va. – Duke women's basketball commanded the game from the jump and finished the contest with four in double figures as the Blue Devils blitzed Richmond, 100-49, Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center.
Junior
Vanessa de Jesus delivered a stellar performance off the bench for Duke (8-1) as she matched her career high, pouring in a game-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Classmate
Kennedy Brown was one point shy of tying her career high, finishing the game with 15 points on 85.7 percent shooting (6-of-7) while also grabbing five boards of her own.
Senior
Celeste Taylor and freshman
Ashlon Jackson also finished in double figures, with Taylor registering 14 points and Jackson contributing a dozen for a career high.
Elizabeth Balogun led the efforts on the glass with a game-high eight rebounds and
Jordyn Oliver dished out a game-high seven assists.
Rachel Ollstrom led Richmond (6-3) with 11 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Duke kickstarted the contest scoring eight of the game's first nine points, then went on a 7-0 run late in the period to open up an 11-point margin with 1:49 left in the frame. After 10 minutes of play, Duke held a 15-7 lead.
- The Blue Devils kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second as they exploded for 33 points – the squad's highest second-quarter point total in program history.
- Eight of the 10 Blue Devil players that played in period scored, led by Taylor (8), Jackson (6) and Balogun (5). The trio combined to go 6-of-7 from the floor, including an 83.3 percent clip (5-of-6) from distance.
- Duke held a 30-point lead at the intermission, 48-18. Taylor paced the scoring efforts with 10 points, with Brown adding eight. Balogun led the efforts on the glass in the first half with six boards while Oliver led the way with four dimes.
- The Blue Devils erupted for a third-quarter record 40 points, including a 28-3 run over the final 6:03 to put the game further out of reach.
- Leading the way during the third quarter for the Blue Devils was de Jesus, who poured in 13 of her 17 points during the 10-minute period on a perfect 100 percent from the floor. Brown and Reigan Richardson tallied seven and six points, respectively. Balogun and Taylor chipped in four apiece while Taya Corosdale, Jackson and Oliver added buckets of their own to round out the scoring.
- Duke put the finishing touches on the game to lock down the 51-point victory.
GAME NOTES
- Duke's 33-point second period outburst set a school record for most points in a second quarter.
- The Blue Devils cashed in 81.3 percent (13-of-16) of their shots during the 10-minute session, which ranks as the highest second quarter field goal percentage in program history.
- The 40 points scored in the third was also a Duke record for most points in the respective quarter.
- The Blue Devils eclipsed the 100-point mark for the second time this season, while holding its sixth opponent to 50 points or less.
- Duke's 51-point margin of victory was the second largest by the Blue Devils this season.
- The Blue Devils tallied 25 assists on 38 made field goals (.658), marking Duke's fourth game with 20-plus assists and the third time with at least 25 dimes.
- Duke had its best showing of the season from behind the arc, hitting 11 treys on a 48 percent clip (23 attempts).
- Duke netted 30 points off 18 Richmond turnovers. The visitors also outscored the Spiders in the paint (40-20), on second-chance opportunities (17-7), on the fastbreak (19-2) and off the bench (49-13).
- Duke finished the game with four in double figures – de Jesus (17), Brown (15), Taylor (14) and Jackson (12).
- Oliver notched her second consecutive game with seven assists and zero turnovers.
