DURHAM - The Duke volleyball team collected a 3-2 victory (22-25, 26-24, 23-25, 31-29, 15-11) over Wake Forest Wednesday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Senior Gracie Johnson and graduate Devon Chang tallied career performances to spearhead the Blue Devils.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johnson tallied a career-high 29 kills and just six errors to post an impressive .338 hitting percentage while Chang dished a career-high 57 assists in the match. Johnson added 11 digs, an ace and a block to showcase her all-around volleyball game.
- Kerry Keefe and Rachel Richardson added 15 and 10 kills, respectively, as Keefe hit .406 percent while Chang led the defensive unit with 16 digs to go along with three blocks. Rylie Kadel added six blocks and also tallied three aces in addition to Chang.
- Duke got behind early and trailed 1-0 after a strong opening set by the Demon Deacons. The Blue Devils flipped the script in the second set with a .357 hitting percentage as Kadel and Johnson each tallied four kills to pace the offensive unit. Kadel also registered two solo blocks to help keep Wake Forest on its heels.
- Tied up at 1-1, Wake Forest's Peyton Suess hit .444 percent as the Demon Deacons took a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth. Despite dropping the set, Johnson's swing came alive with eight kills on 22 attempts.
- With the match on the line, the Blue Devils held off 10 match points to send the contest to a fifth set. The fourth frame, where both squads' offenses were clicking, saw 16 tie scores and seven lead changes. It was a battle of the outside hitters as Wake's Paige Crawford and Johnson went toe-to-toe offensively with Duke prevailing.
- In the decisive fifth set, the Blue Devils posted an impressive .421 hitting percentage as they put it in cruise control.
NOTES
- Duke is now 16-11 overall and 7-9 in the ACC.
- The victory was head coach Jolene Nagel's 683rd of her career and the 480th at the helm of the Blue Devils.
- It was the program's 998th win.
- Johnson tallied her 17th career double-double and second straight while recording her 14th match with 20 or more kills.
- Chang tallied her 16th career double-double and her three aces were a career-high.
- Kadel registered four or more blocks for the 17th time in her career.
- Duke had three or more players with double-digit kills for the 10th time this season.
- Wake Forest was led by Crawford and Suess with 21 kills apiece.
