DAVIDSON, N.C. – Behind a strong second half to outscore Davidson 34-18, the Duke women's basketball team powered its way to a 60-37 victory over the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at John M. Belk Arena.
Senior
Celeste Taylor paced the Blue Devils (3-0) with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting while also snagging four rebounds and collecting two steals. Sophomore
Shayeann Day-Wilson and redshirt junior
Jordyn Oliver also finished in double figures, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. Oliver led the efforts on the glass for the second straight game with eight boards, while sophomore
Reigan Richardson tallied a team-best five assists.
The Wildcats were led by graduate student Chloe Welch's 12 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game got off to a slow start offensively, but Duke was able to create some separation late in the first quarter and held a 10-6 lead after 10 minutes of action.
- Both teams found their offensive rhythm in the second period with 29 combined points.
- Duke built a 19-12 advantage midway through the frame behind buckets from Lee Volker, Elizabeth Balogun and five points from Taylor.
- The Wildcats rallied back to even the score with 2:39 to go, but Duke closed the half with seven unanswered to take a 26-19 lead into the break.
- Taylor and Oliver led the scoring efforts for the Blue Devils with eight points apiece. Day-Wilson led the way on the glass with five boards while also tying rookie Ashlon Jackson with two assists.
- Duke turned up its defensive intensity in the third, limiting the Wildcats to just six points and kept them off the scoreboard for the final 6:44 of the frame.
- Offensively, the Blue Devils put up 19 points of their own to create more distance between themselves and Davidson. Duke capped off the third quarter with 15-0 run and extended the advantage to 20, 45-25.
- Kennedy Brown and Day-Wilson combined for all 15 Blue Devil points in the final period as Duke locked down the 23-point win.
GAME NOTES:
- Duke finished with three players in double figures – Taylor (14), Day-Wilson (12) and Oliver (10).
- The Blue Devils held Davidson to six points in the first and third quarters, which is tied for eighth and sixth, respectively, on the Duke charts for fewest points in those respective quarters.
- For the third consecutive game, the Blue Devils have outscored their opposition in points off turnovers (17-10), in the paint (34-10), off the bench (21-3) and second chance points (12-6).
- Duke assisted on 14 of its 23 made field goals.
