DURHAM – Four former and one current Blue Devil are among the 52 players selected to take part in the USA Lacrosse Fall Classic at USA Lacrosse headquarters this weekend. The evaluation weekend will feature an intrasquad game between the best players in the country and a pair of games against reigning NCAA champion Maryland.
USA Lacrosse head coach
John Danowski, who led the U.S. to its 2018 championship, welcomes the group in one of the two final evaluations before selecting the 23-man roster that will represent the United States at next summer's world championship.
The Blue Devils set to don the red, white and blue are
JT Giles-Harris, Brennan O'Neill, Brad Smith, Michael Sowers and
Cade Van Raaphorst. O'Neill is one of six current collegiate players picked to take part.
O'Neill, a junior for the Blue Devils, enters his third season with 129 career points from 98 goals and 31 assists. He is on pace to become the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career goals, needing just two to reach the benchmark. A two-time All-ACC pick and a 2022 second-team All-American, O'Neill joins Virginia's Connor Shellenberger as the two only two collegiate juniors among the 52-person list. Duke is one of three collegiate programs to have five players represented as Maryland leads the way with eight selections.
Giles-Harris is coming off an outstanding first complete season in the Premier Lacrosse League, garnering the league's Dave Pietramala Defensive Player of the Year Award. He helped lead the Chrome in dramatic turnaround from last place in 2021 to second this past season.
He was joined on the PLL All-Star team by former teammates Smith and Van Raaphorst. Both were instrumental in their squads' success over the course of the season. Smith and the Whipsnakes captured the regular season crown with Smith leading the midfield with 22 points from 13 goals – one two-pointer – and eight assists. Van Raaphorst led Atlas and tied for eighth in the league with 10 caused turnovers. He also picked up 25 ground balls.
Sowers is fresh off capturing the PLL title with Waterdogs. The 2021 Duke grad was named the PLL Championship game after leading the league with 12 points over the course of the playoffs. In the championship battle with Chaos, the speedy attackman had two goals and an assist. He finished his first complete season with 44 points in 12 games.
The evaluation begins with Friday night's USA Men's Showcase, a head-to-head showdown between the best players in the country — primarily Premier Lacrosse League stars with a few of the top current collegians mixed in. On Saturday, the U.S. men will split squads to play a pair of games against reigning NCAA champion Maryland.
The U.S. men's games are part of the USA Lacrosse Fall Classic, which also features the U.S. women's senior team and the USA Select U16 and U18 teams competing in the Brogden Cup.
