DURHAM – The Duke swimming and diving team split meets against Queens University of Charlotte and fell to Tennessee on Saturday at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.

The Duke women topped top-ranked Division II side Queens 192-62 but fell to No. 6 Tennessee 167-94. Duke's men fell to No. 2 Queens and No. 15 Tennessee, 151-110 and 175-87, respectively.

Dan Colella said. "It was a great meet with two really exceptional teams to knock the cobwebs off and get some great racing in. I'm just really proud of the way they performed. Not just the wins today, there were a lot of great performances across the board. I think we have set ourselves up well for the home stretch of the season."

Cabell Whitlow and sophomore
Catherine Purnell secured valuable points for Duke in the 200 butterfly. Whitlow placed first with a time of 2:00.53, while Purnell was not far behind in second (2:00.74). Purnell also was Duke's top finisher in the 1,000 freestyle, clocking 10:11.98 to place second in the event.

The Blue Devils were strong in the breaststroke as sophomore
Sarah Foley placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.33) and second in the 100 (1:02.25). Sophomore
Catherine Belyakov finished third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.51. The duo also performed well in the 200 individual medley as Foley and Belyakov touched second and third with times of 2:01.36 and 2:02.78, respectively.

Freshman
Yixuan Chang continued a strong rookie campaign with two strong performances. Chang placed first in the 500 freestyle and second in the 200 freestyle with times of 4:52.68 and 1:48.65, respectively. In addition, senior
Easop Lee put together a pair of second-place finishes in both backstroke events in the meet. Lee touched in 54.59 and 1:58.31 in the 100 and 200 backstroke, respectively.

Rookies
McKenna Smith and
KyAnh Truong also put together good meets to open 2022. Smith took second in the 100 freestyle with a career-best time of 50.64 and finished third in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 23.30. Truong also placed third in the 100 butterfly (55.71).

In the relays, Duke's women placed second in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. In the 200 medley, Duke swam a mark of 1:39.61 from junior
Emma Shuppert, Foley, Truong and Smith. The Blue Devils closed out the meet with a time of 1:32.58 by Truong, senior
Shayna Hollander, Chang and Smith in the 200 freestyle relay.

On the men's side, sophomore
Brendan Driscoll recorded a pair of strong races to lead the Blue Devils. He placed first in the 1,000 freestyle with a mark of 9:14.15 and touched second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:30.76.

Cole Reznick and freshman
Michael Jiang also sported strong times. Reznick finished first in the 200 individual medley (1:50.84), third in the 100 breaststroke (55.41) and fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:03.23). Jiang recorded finishes of third in the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley with times of 1:49.05 and 1:51.13, respectively, while finishing fourth in the 1,000 freestyle in 9:27.06.

Matthew Whelan scored in the 200 butterfly as he placed fourth with a time of 1:50.47.

The men's relays recorded a pair of third-place finishes during the meet. The quartet of sophomore
David Chang, Reznick, junior
Charlie Gingrich and Whelan touched in 1:28.36 in the 200 medley relay while the foursome of junior
Coleman Kredich, Whelan, Gingrich and sophomore
Zach McIntyre finished with a mark of 1:21.39 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Duke returns to action Saturday, January 15 at NC State in Raleigh, N.C. Diving is set to begin competition at 10 a.m. with swimming to follow at 11 a.m.
