DURHAM – Duke men's lacrosse head coach
John Danowski has announced the 2022 schedule. The Blue Devils open the season Feb. 4 in Durham and will play 10 home contests overall at Koskinen Stadium.
A Tough Slate in 2022
The 2022 slate features eight of the 15 teams from the 2021 NCAA Tournament field and nine of the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine preseason top 20. Duke, coming in at No. 3, has matchups set against five of the top nine squads in the poll. The Blue Devils also play High Point and Richmond, which received special mention as teams just on the outside of the top 20.
An Action-Packed February
Duke will play a program-high seven games in the month of February with the first six coming in Durham in a span of 19 days. The Blue Devils are 70-17 all-time in the month of February but have never played more than five games in the month.
Duke opens the year with a weekend set against Robert Morris and reigning America East champion and preseason No. 19 Vermont, Feb. 4 and 6, respectively. The following weekend, Duke welcomes Manhattan and Jacksonville to Koskinen Stadium before welcoming No. 12 Denver Feb. 19.
The Blue Devils are 9-6 all-time versus the Pioneers and have won four consecutive by a total of only eight goals. Denver's last win in Durham was a 14-12 triumph in 2013.
Duke closes its February home slate against Delaware, Feb. 22. The matchup features the return of current Blue Hen head coach
Ben DeLuca, who served as an assistant coach with the Blue Devils in 2014. It will be the first game between the two since a 2011 NCAA Tournament contest in Durham.
The Blue Devils hit the road for the first time to take on Ivy League foe and preseason No. 9 Penn Feb. 26. Penn returns to the field for the first time since the spring of 2020 after the Ivy League did not play in 2021 due to COVID-19.
Schedule Slows and ACC Play Starts in March
After playing seven games in 23 days, Duke slows to one game per week in March. The Blue Devils travel to High Point for a March 1 matchup before returning to host Richmond, March 5. Duke closes the month on the road making trips to play No. 7 Loyola, Towson and No. 14 Syracuse.
The Blue Devils are playing Loyola for the 23rd consecutive year, dating back to an 11-10 Greyhound win in 2000. Duke is 18-7 against the Greyhounds in the 22-year span and 15-6 in regular season games.
The 2021 season was the first time the two hadn't played in the regular season since 1999, meeting instead in a thrilling NCAA quarterfinal that saw Duke outlast Loyola, 10-9, in overtime.
Duke starts conference play March 26 at No. 14 Syracuse for a 2 p.m., matchup in the Carrier Dome. The Blue Devils, 7-13 overall against the Orange, are looking for their first win on Syracuse's home field.
North Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia Oh My
The months of April and May will be filled with Tar Heels, Irish and Cavaliers. Duke faces North Carolina and Notre Dame twice and hosts Virginia for a single game.
The Blue Devils start April with the short trip to Chapel Hill to play No. 6 North Carolina. Duke aims to avenge the setback at Kenan Stadium in 2021. Duke returns home for a three-game homestand that features Notre Dame, Virginia and North Carolina.
The Blue Devils split with both the Tar Heels and Irish last year and edged Virginia on the road. Duke has not lost to the Cavaliers in the regular season since 2004. The three-game stretch will take place in a span of 13 days, April 2-14, before the Blue Devils get a long break during the final exam period.
Duke will play two games in May before NCAA Tournament action gets underway. The Blue Devils host North Carolina, May 1 and cap the regular season at Notre Dame, May 7.
TV Schedule
The full television schedule will be released at a later date by the ACC and ESPN. Every Duke home game will be able to be seen on the ESPN family of networks – ACC Network, ESPNU or ACC Network Extra.
