LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Duke freshman
Shayeann Day-Wilson collected a game-high 25 points, but it was not enough as the 21st-ranked Blue Devils dropped a 77-65 decision at fifth-ranked Louisville Sunday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center.
The Blue Devils (13-6, 4-5 ACC) were paced by Day-Wilson with 25 points, while graduate student
Lexi Gordon added 11 points.
Louisville got off to a hot start scoring the first seven points of the contest. The Blue Devils were held without a field goal until the 7:11 mark when
Elizbeth Balogun drained a jumper. Duke trailed 15-3 early, but the Blue Devils went on a 6-0 run as Day-Wilson and freshman
Lee Volker drained back-to-back 3-pointers. The Cardinals would drain four 3-pointers in the first quarter and led 25-14.
Behind an 11-4 run to open the second quarter, Louisville built a 36-18 advantage, before sophomore
Vanessa de Jesus scored five straight points for the Blue Devils. The Cardinals closed the half on a 9-3 run to lead 45-27 at the break.
Louisville drained eight first half 3-pointers and hit 52.9 percent from the field in the first half, while scoring 15 points off turnovers and adding 12 second chance points.
Duke was paced by Day-Wilson with seven points, while Gordon and de Jesus chipped in five each.
The Blue Devils came out in the third period and went on an 11-2 run to cut the Louisville lead to single digits, 47-38, as five Duke players scored. Duke hit three out of its first five field goals, including a 3-pointer from senior
Miela Goodchild. The Cardinals managed to get their lead back to 53-38, but the Blue Devils had another run in and cut the lead to 55-46 with 2:17 remaining in the period.
After hitting eight first half 3-pointers, the Duke defense limited Louisville to 1-of-7 from downtown in the third.
The Blue Devils continued to mount a comeback as they went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 62-57 with 7:23 remaining. Day-Wilson scored seven early points in the quarter to reach 20+ scoring for the second time this season and the first in ACC action.
Late in the fourth quarter, Duke committed two straight turnovers and Louisville drained its first 3-pointer of the quarter to get the lead back to double-digits before holding on for the win.
The Blue Devils outscored the Cardinals, 38-32, in the second half.
Louisville (18-2, 8-1) was led by Hailey Van Lith with 17 points.
Game Notes:
- The 25 points by Day-Wilson was the most by a Duke freshman since Goodchild drained 26 points on the road at Notre Dame in 2019. Day-Wilson was one shy of a career high.
- Duke allowed 45 first half points, which were the second-most allowed this season. The Blue Devils have allowed 47 and 45 points in the first half the last two games
- The Blue Devils allowed 29 points off 20 turnovers, including 17 second chance points
- Duke allowed a season-high 11 three-pointers
- Senior Miela Goodchild snapped a six-game streak of scoring double-digits
- Rookie Shayeann Day-Wilson scored double-digits for the seventh game in a row
- Head Coach Kara Lawson missed the second straight game due to Duke's health and safety protocols.
- Celeste Taylor missed her sixth straight contest with an injury, after getting hurt at Syracuse on Jan. 9.
