DURHAM β Duke field hockey goalkeeper
Piper Hampsch registered eight saves, but fourth-ranked Northwestern's offense proved to be too much to handle as the No. 12 Blue Devils fell to the Wildcats, 3-0, in the ACC/BIG Cup Friday night.
Duke falls to 1-2 overall with both setbacks coming against top-15 programs. Northwestern, featuring the nation's second-ranked scoring offense, moves to 3-0 for the year.
The Blue Devils were on the front foot to start the game, earning a penalty corner in the first minute of the opening quarter. Senior
Leah Crouse had two looks at the cage blocked by Northwestern backs and
Lily Posternak's rebound effort was turned away by Northwestern goalie Annabel Skubisz.
The Wildcats tallied their first goal five minutes later as Maddie Zimmer battled her way through the Duke defense to the end line and dropped it back to Bente Baekers for the easy finish in the cage for a 1-0 lead after the first quarter.
Duke was better with possession in the second quarter, but was missing that connection into the offensive third of the field. The Blue Devils held Northwestern without a shot for over 12 minutes until the Wildcats forced Duke into a turnover in the defensive end. Clara Roth took advantage for Northwestern and fed Zimmer in the circle who returned the favor as Hampsch came out of the cage to cut down the angle. Roth put away the shot in the open cage for a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Wildcats iced the victory with a final goal early in the fourth quarter after an initial save from Hampsch landed at the feet of Roth for her second goal of the night.
Northwestern outshot Duke, 16-3, and held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners. Hampsch's eight saves are the second most in her young career. She is averaging 5.67 per game for the season.
Duke returns to action in the second game of the ACC/BIG Cup against No. 9 Maryland. First hit is set for 2 p.m., on ACC Network.
