CARY, N.C. – Duke men's and women's cross country competed in the Adidas XC Challenge on Friday night.
The men took home fifth place with 135 points, while the women did not finish with a team score. Friday's event was a tune-up meet as the Blue Devils now shift their attention to the Battle in Beantown and Pre-Nationals.
The No. 23 ranked Blue Devil men were buoyed by a strong run from
Jack Kovach, who finished 14th with a time of 18:22.3 on the 6K course at WakeMed Soccer Park. Kovach smashed his previous best mark, which came at the Elon Opener, by 15.5 seconds and earned his second top-15 finish of the season.
Sophomore
Zach Barry added a 32nd place finish, clocking in at 18:56.2 for an improvement of just over 10 seconds from his Blue Devils debut at Elon. Barry turned in the second fastest time of all Duke men in the field.
On the women's side, junior
Emily Cole made her season debut count with a 17th place finish to lead all Blue Devil women. Cole clocked in at 17:48.1 and competed in her first collegiate 5K and first cross country race since the 2019 NCAA Southeast Regional.
Not far behind was sophomore
Kelli Wilson, who finished 27th with a time of 18:19.4. Wilson set a new 5K personal best by just over 12 seconds.
The Blue Devils are back in action next weekend as both teams compete in the Battle in Beantown, hosted by Boston College, on Sept. 24. The 3:30 p.m. meet will be the last before the all-important Pre-Nationals in Tallahassee, Fla., on Oct. 15.
