DURHAM – Following a 16th place finish at the 2020 NCAA Championship, Duke men's cross country will enter the season as a top-25 program once again, having been selected as the No. 23 team in the nation, as the USTFCCCA announced its preseason cross country rankings on Tuesday.
Â
Men's cross country finished with 78 points, in between No. 22 Indiana (89 points) and No. 24 Southern Utah (71 points). The men check in as the third-highest ranked team in the ACC, behind No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 15 Wake Forest. Women's cross country also received votes, finishing with four points.
Â
For men's cross country, it marks the highest preseason ranking in exactly 11 years, since the Blue Devils also checked in at No. 23 in the 2010 USTFCCCA Preseason poll on Aug. 31, 2010.
Â
Both teams also earned high regional rankings, as the men are listed No. 3 in the Southeast Region, behind Wake Forest and Furman, while the women check in at No. 6 in the Southeast Region.
Â
The men's team returns several members from last season's NCAA Championship squad and will be led by new Head Coach
Angela Reckart, with five of seven competitors back in action. The team's top returning NCAA finisher is graduate student
Josh Romine, who placed 96th, while the team's top ACC finisher; graduate student and All-ACC honoree
CJ Ambrosio, is also back.
Â
On the women's side, the team's top finisher in both the NCAA and ACC Championships, graduate student
Michaela Reinhart, is back to lead a young unit.
Â
The men's and women's teams will open their 2021 season at the Elon Opener on Friday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m.
