DURHAM, N.C. – Entering the 51st season in program history, the Duke volleyball team will open the 2021 campaign this weekend at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Blue Devils will face the host Chanticleers Friday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m., before taking on Iowa Saturday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m., at the HTC Center.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Devils concluded the 2020-21 season with a 9-13 overall record and went 7-10 in conference play. Entering her 23rd season at the helm of the program, head coach
Jolene Nagel returns 11 letterwinners from this past season's squad, including All-ACC selections
Mackenzie Cole,
Ade Owokoniran and
Payton Schwantz, in addition to five newcomers. During her Duke tenure, Nagel has led the Blue Devils to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and 14 seasons with 20 or more victories.
Duke welcomed North Carolina A&T Thursday, Aug. 19 for an exhibition match as the Blue Devils secured a 3-0 win.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
Coastal Carolina: Friday marks the fourth all-time meeting between the two squads as Duke holds a 3-0 record. In their last meeting in 2018, the Blue Devils captured a 3-0 victory at home.
Iowa: Duke is 1-2 overall against Iowa and the two squads haven't met since 2003. In a five-set thriller in its last outing, Iowa secured a 3-2 win.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Coastal Carolina: The Chanticleers had an impressive 2020-21 season as they went 18-1 and 16-0 in the Sun Belt. The Chanticleers return one of their top hitters from last season in Ani Bozdeva, who racked up 177 kills for a .274 hitting percentage. Their top setter Brigitta Petrenko also returns with 536 assists/set last year along with blockers Christina Nance and Ilse Sinnige.
Iowa: Duke is 1-2 overall against Iowa and the two squads haven't met since 2003. In a five-set thriller in its last outing, Iowa secured a 3-2 win. The Hawkeyes welcome back their five top hitters from last year, including Courtney Buzzerio, who led the squad with 184 kills and 323 assists .

BACK IN ACTION
Nagel returns nearly all of her offense from the 2020-21 season, led by
Ade Owokoniran (243 kills),
Gracie Johnson (223 kills) and
Payton Schwantz (160 kills).
Duke's defense is also set up to be successful this season, spearheaded by 2021 All-ACC libero Cole with 396 digs.
The Blue Devils return both setters in
Camille Nazor and
Alex Springate and their top blockers are back in action in
Lily Cooper,
Lizzie Fleming and
Georgia Stavrinides.
